The estate was founded by Karl Wehrheim in the buildings of a historic Art Nouveau farmyard in the municipality of Birkweiler in 1920.

Weingut Dr. Wehrheim - Truly great wines from Palatine soil

The family continues to play, and will certainly also in the future play, a defining role at Weingut Dr. Wehrheim. In the meantime, the fourth generation is involved in the production of classic dry wines. Karl-Heinz Wehrheim has been directing the work in the vineyard and in the cellar since 1992. His son Franz joined the estate in 2010 while still a student of oenology. Wehrheim’s wife and three daughters are also involved. And even senior Dr. Heinz Wehrheim, now well over 90 years old, is still on hand in an advisory capacity.

In time, character emerges

The philosophy of Karl-Heinz Wehrheim, the owner of Weinguts Dr. Wehrheim, very clearly describes what a great wine must be like. Quote:

"To offer harmony and balance without being sweet. To embody richness without appearing 'fat'. To taste piquant, mineral and distinctive without relying on an obvious fruitiness. To have an intense and multi-layered bouquet."

Whether a wine is matured in wooden casks or stainless steel tanks is not an end in itself. The decision is made according to what is the best solution for each individual wine. Wehrheim also allows his wines to mature for as long as it takes for them to develop their ideal character.

Sustainability for future generations at Dr. Wehrheim

Karl-Heinz Wehrheim is well aware of his obligation and responsibility towards nature and towards future generations who should also be able to make a living from viticulture. That is why they have been working biodynamically since 2007 and have consistently pursued this method of cultivation. Since 2010, all of the estate’s wines have been organically certified. On the one hand, it is about preserving the cultural and ecological heritage. On the other, biodynamic cultivation also has an impact on the quality and distinctive typicity of the wines.

Achieving good through dispute – Weingut Dr. Wehrheim

Karl-Heinz Wehrheim was also a co-founder of the association "Fünf Winzer - Fünf Freunde" (“Five Winemakers – Five Friends”), a cooperation with other leading wineries in the Southern Palatinate. At a celebration in 1991 they devised what was then a rather ambitious plan, namely to produce “truly great wines” on Palatine soil. What was unusual was their approach and way of working. The five winemakers set out to achieve their goal through collegial exchange and open collaboration, and also through cultivated dispute and joint wine-related travel. In the meantime, other winemakers have joined this successful association.

The grape varieties at Dr. Wehrheim are:

  • Pinot Blanc
  • Chardonnay
  • Riesling
  • Pinot Noir
