The winery Emilio Hidalgo stands out from the average range with its exceptional selection of sherries in terms of quality. Repeatedly praised by the trade press, these sherries represent an interesting alternative to the “great” sweet wines of the world, yet cost only a fraction of their price.

Winery Emilio Hidalgo – family-owned since 1874

Emilio Hidalgo

The history of the Hidalgo family as winegrowers goes back to the second half of the 19th century, when they began purchasing their own vineyards and operating their own cellar. The work soon paid off, because as early as the beginning of the 20th century the Hidalgos were already active internationally, with branches in various countries. Today, Emilio Hidalgo exports within Europe, among others, to England, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, and internationally to the USA and Japan.

Living history at Hidalgo

The headquarters of Emilio Hidalgo is still located in the estate building dating from the 19th century. Situated on Calle Clavel in the sherry town of Jerez, the building reflects the typical style of the wineries of that era. Inspired by the Mudéjar style, a historical artistic and architectural movement of the Moors in reconquered Spain, which experienced a revival in the 19th century through historicism, these wineries are often called “cathedrals.”

The wine cellar in Jerez

The building has thick walls and is whitewashed in order to keep the sun, and thus the heat, largely out of the cellar. Huge wooden beam ceilings span the countless barrels, and the floors are covered with Moorish tiles. Large windows allow targeted and effective ventilation of the cellar. In this building you can breathe the history of winemaking in Spain.

Sherry and brandy from Emilio Hidalgo

Emilio Hidalgo currently produces sherries from the following grape varieties:

  • Palomino
  • Pedro Ximénez

Seven different variants of the Spanish wine are produced from Palomino; only rarely is the “Santa Ana” from Pedro Ximénez released. In addition, the soleras in which the sherry is produced are used for the production of an in-house brandy.
