For around 40 years, Werner Schönleber has been running the winery on the western edge of the Nahe growing region. Wine-growing is in his blood, as his ancestors named Emrich were demonstrably pursuing this passion as early as the mid-18th century.

Quality close to the Nahe

The vineyards are still family-owned to this day. Together with his wife Hanne, his son Frank and daughter-in-law Anja, Werner Schönleber has greatly expanded the estate since 1965. On now around 19 hectares, the family cultivates, in addition to Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, 85% high-quality Riesling. Weingut Emrich-Schönleber can now boast numerous awards, as the wines are exclusively of first-class quality. Since as early as 1994, Weingut Emrich-Schönleber has been a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter, Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates).

Kissed by the sun

Not far from the Nahe, a small tributary of the Rhine, the Monzinger vineyards lie to the south of a large forested area. This leads to a relatively cool viticultural climate. However, the steep south and southwest-facing slopes on the Monzinger Halenberg and Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen offer perfect growing conditions. Here, the vines are pampered with almost 2,000 hours of sunshine per year and later yield top-class wines. These prime sites of the estate alone account for around 17 hectares of the total cultivated area. On stony soils strongly characterized by slate, vines grow that are treated to elaborate and gentle manual work. These vines produce particularly aromatic, small-berried grapes.

 Werner and Frank Schönleber

Award-winning wines

Werner Schönleber works primarily in the midst of his vines. His son Frank demonstrates his talent mainly in the winery cellar. Both men share a special instinct for wine. All this gives them the ability to get the best out of the grapes and produce very high-quality wines. Their special intuition, commitment, hard work, and their own philosophy have been regularly leading to well-deserved awards for 20 years already. Among these are, for example, the titles “Winemaker of the Year”, “Best Riesling”, “Best Matured Spätlese” and many more. Weingut Emrich-Schönleber produces, among others, dry to off-dry, fruit-sweet and noble sweet styles. The dry varieties include, for example, Monzinger Riesling “Frühtau” and Riesling “Mineral”.

The following grape varieties are cultivated at Emrich-Schönleber

  • Pinot Blanc
  • Riesling
