Jacopo Poli

Poli - Top Grappa from Northern Italy

Poli produces mainly grappa or grappa-derived liqueurs. Grappa, a clear pomace spirit from northern Italy, has now found its home under the shadow of the mighty Monte Grappa. In the alleys of the town of Bassano del Grappa, one can find a plethora of distilleries of the Italian specialty. One might think that the brandy borrowed its name from the town, but this is not the case. The art of distillation, brought to Europe by the Crusades, has been used since the Middle Ages by wine growers, who processed the residue of wine production - the pomace - into aqua vitae or grape.

Among the distilleries of Italy, Poli has been present for years in the top leagues in terms of quality and reputation. Poli's success is based on several factors: the selection of the best marc from the Bassano del Grappa and Breganze regions, and the old tradition of using high quality products carefully but not sparingly.

From a poor man's drink to a national spirit - also thanks to Poli Grappa

Thanks to improved production conditions and perfected distillery processes, the image of grappa was greatly enhanced. Until the middle of the 20th century, grappa still had the reputation of being a drink for the poorest of the poor. This has changed greatly to this day and this is due in no small part to the efforts of Poli, who have been producing the Italian marc spirit for over 114 years.

Giovanni Poli's motto "I sell dear, but measure right!"

The pithy saying can be traced back to the son of company founder Giovanni Battaista  Poli , who used a converted steam pressure boiler to vastly improve the quality of Poli's pomace brandies. While competitors at the time used direct-fired distillation stills filled with pomace, his method was not only much safer, but also ensured an increase in quality and a better influence on the desired result.

While GioBatta Poli was still producing grappaioli as a sideline, mainly producing straw headdresses, it was his son Giovanni who, thanks to the machine he designed, was able to establish the success of the family business. With Toni Poli, the company entered the third generation. Thanks to his ambitious father, he was able to explore the world and expand his knowledge of flavors. Thus, a little adventure is also in every product of the family-run company. The Poli production facility in use today dates back to Jacopo Poli's father. He built it in the late 1950s and continued to refine distillation and storage. Jacopo Poli, together with his siblings, continues the distillery in the 4th generation and constantly expands the range. Now the following spirits are part of the rich portfolio of the family business:

  • single-varietal grappas made from Merlot, Pinot Noir, Muscat, Gewürztraminer and other grape varieties
  • Grappa from mixed marc
  • Grape and fruit brandies
  • Brandyfruit and chocolate, as well as coffee and egg liqueurs
  • or the classic from Poli - the grappa aged in barrique

In addition to the distillery, Poli has also felt obliged to bring the centuries-old history of grappa closer to a wide range of tourists and enthusiasts. The Museo della Grappa is located directly on the picturesque wooden bridge in the old town of Bassano del Grappa. Here, in pleasant surroundings, you can trace the history of grappa and its development into a cult drink.

Noble wine taste from Italy

Jacopo Poli's passion for grappa is not only evident in the enthusiasm he has for the drink, but also in the fact that he is constantly trying to reinvent it. He achieves this not only by constantly tinkering with the distillation process so that everyone can find their favorite grappa, but also by showing that his products can be a staple in demand for bartenders and mixologists worldwide. On the company's site, you can browse through dozens of creative grappa-based cocktail recipes and are sure to find something for your next cocktail party. You can learn more about recipes using Poli's grappas here.

That the energy and sense of tradition of the head of the company is not in vain can be seen in the abundance of awards that Poli's products have received on a large scale at various fairs and tastings.
