The Joseph Drouhin estate is one of the largest wineries in Burgundy. 80 hectares, spread across Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise and Chablis, belong to the family. Over two-thirds of the vineyards have Premier or Grand Cru classification. With the size naturally comes a corresponding diversity; by now they offer 90 different wines. The manor house of Joseph Drouhin is an old watermill from the 18th century. Situated near Chablis, it is surrounded by Grand Cru vineyards, the mill wheel turns in the Serein river, which flows past the mill.

The vineyards from above

Joseph Drouhin winery – wines of the world

The family’s history as vintners begins in 1880. Joseph Drouhin, then just 22 years old,  settled in Beaune and founded a wine business. His goal was to produce a wine that bore his name and offered high quality. It was to be his son Maurice who acquired the first vineyards and thus created the basis for the estate’s wines. Robert Drouhin, in turn, expanded the estate to its present size. He took over the company in 1957 and already then introduced the culture raisonnée, which stands for chemical-free cultivation. In this way he foresaw the trend toward organic viticulture early on, and the family now practices it to the highest standard. Today the estate is run by Frédéric, Véronique, Philippe and Laurent, Robert’s children.

Famous sites in Burgundy

The family owns some of the most famous sites in Burgundy. Among others, the following are represented by name:

  • Clos de Mouches
  • Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche
  • Musigny
  • Clos de Vougeot
  • Corton-Charlemagne

Most of the hillsides are planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the two typically Burgundian grape varieties. For some of the regional or village appellations, Drouhin buys grapes from partners in the region. In this way, in line with their wines, the family arrives at a diversity of terroirs that comprises nearly 90 appellations.

The canons’ cellar in Beaune

In the Drouhin cellars

If the main headquarters is already of historical interest, the cellars speak volumes about times past. The Drouhins now own 4 buildings, including cellars beneath the former Burgundian parliament and one that was built by the canons of Beaune.

Drouhin offers wines for everyone, with great complexity and elegance. They can be found in leading restaurants worldwide and are also an ideal companion for cuisine of any origin. In addition, organic viticulture lowers the barrier for environmentally conscious consumers to enjoy the finest wines from Burgundy. Let our selection of wines from Joseph Drouhin convince you as well!
