Generational change – from Eller to Juwel Weine
In 1984, Ingrid and Thomas Eller founded their own winery in Rheinhessen, around Alsheim, the predecessor to Juwel Weine. Their daughter Juliane Eller took over her parents’ business in 2013, after the young winemaker had completed her studies in Geisenheim. At that time, she was just 23 years old. She was eager to give free rein to her creativity and was determined to implement new ideas. The name Juwel is composed of the first two letters of her first and last name, with a W for wine in the middle.
Juliane Eller turned the entire company upside down from the ground up. She drastically reduced the 25 cultivated grape varieties to 5, and the grapes are harvested by hand. In addition, she is gradually converting the estate to organic cultivation. Already now, she completely refrains from using artificial fertilizers and pesticides.

From vineyard to cellar
Soon, Weingut Juwel will produce only organically grown wines. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, carefully using shears and buckets. Strict selection already takes place in the vineyard to ensure that only flawless grapes make it into the cellar. The meticulous work continues in the cellar. The wines ferment spontaneously with natural yeasts, and the red wines then enjoy additional maturation time in barriques.
Location and soils
Juliane Eller and Weingut Juwel can call around 20 hectares of vineyard area their own. Five different grape varieties are planted here:
- Riesling
- Pinot Blanc
- Pinot Gris
- Silvaner
- Pinot Noir
The soils here consist primarily of loess loam, clay, and limestone. The Riesling thrives excellently in the Alsheimer Frühmesse, the best-known site here, which is cultivated in a close-to-nature manner.

Awards
The innovative Juwel wines and Weingut Juwel of Juliane Eller regularly garner awards. In Gault & Millau you can read that the Juwel wines “reflect typicity and combine accessibility with high standards.” Awards and positive reviews have come, among others, from:
- Gault Millau
- Eichelmann
- Vinum
The Rheinhessen wine region
The wines of Juwel - Juliane Eller grow and flourish in Germany’s largest wine-growing region, with 26,500 hectares under vine: Rheinhessen in Rhineland-Palatinate. Many innovative and young winemakers and wineries are driving change in the wine market from here. Modern technology, improved quality, and new ideas ensure unmistakable and outstanding wines.
Viticulture in Rheinhessen looks back on a tradition of more than 2,000 years. In the 19th century, Rheinhessen’s wines achieved success worldwide.
Riesling, Silvaner, and the Burgundy varieties grow and ripen particularly well here; the soils consist of limestone, clay, sand, loam, slate, quartzite, porphyry, volcanic rock, Rotliegend, and sedimentary layers. Each year, 2.5 million hectoliters of wine are produced in Rheinhessen.
The best-known vineyard sites in Rheinhessen:
- Hasenlauf
- Roter Hang
- Heerkretz
- Westhofener Morstein
- Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen
- Wormser Liebfrauenstift
- Kirchenstück
- Aulerde

FAIR'N GREEN – Juwel Weine take responsibility

JUWEL Weine has now been awarded the FAIR'N GREEN certificate! This certificate focuses on sustainability and considers viticulture from various perspectives: ecology, economy, and social aspects. It looks at and evaluates elements such as environmental protection, promotion of biodiversity, protection of natural resources, as well as the preservation and enhancement of the cultural landscape. Social responsibility, fair wages, and societal responsibility are also taken into account.
Winemakers are no longer just food producers. They see themselves as custodians of rural cultural heritage. They work hand in hand with nature, create an ecosystem, plant new vineyards, and preserve them for future generations. In the vineyard, organic fertilizers are used instead of herbicides, and, for example, great importance is placed on well-coordinated cover crop management. For bottling the wines, more environmentally friendly lightweight glass bottles are used, which require fewer raw materials in production. All these points are part of the comprehensive concept embodied by the FAIR'N GREEN certificate.
