Although Saale-Unstrut was already documented as a wine region in 998, it really took off in 1138 with the founding of the Pforta monastery. The old Cistercians tilled the area and turned the landscape into vineyards - always true to their maxims of "vita activa" with a balanced ratio of "ora et labora".
