Laborie winery was founded by Jean Taillefert. In 1691, the French refugee arrived in Paarl, South Africa, with his parents and began to clear the vineyard of the bushes growing on it and to grow grapes. Even in his early days, his wines stood out in terms of quality. Thus, the French writer François Leguat already noted: "The Huguenot Taillefert has the best wine in the country, not unlike the smaller growths in Champagne". After the Taillefert family produced its first wines, the question of a name for the small winery soon arose. Originally, the family named the estate La Brie - after the district in the French Potou- Charents from which they came. However, in everyday usage, the words merged and La Brie evolved into Laborie.
In 1972, Laborie was bought by KWV, which meant a further increase in the quality of Laborie's wines. KWV is considered one of the leading producers of South African wines and spirits and operates globally in more than 100 countries.
Today, Laborie's vineyards at the foot of the Paarl Mountains are planted primarily with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Attention is paid to the condition of the individual vines and to their development on Paarl's granite soils. The result of careful cultivation methods are red and white wines that have already received numerous coveted awards - both nationally and internationally.
