Langmeil Winery Barossa History

In 1842, pioneer Christian Auricht founded one of the Barossa's first trading villages on the banks of the North Para River and named it Langmeil. This historic site is now home to the Langmeil Winery. Auricht had immigrated from Prussia in 1838 to seek religious freedom for his family in the New World. Auricht's legacy survives today in the Freedom Vineyard, believed to have been planted in 1843 as part of his mixed farm and now considered the oldest surviving Shiraz vineyard in the world. In 1916, the village of Langmeil then became Bilyara and is now known as the municipality of Tanunda. Theodor Hanisch established the first winery on the property in 1932, which went by the name Paradale. In 1972, Bernkastel Wines purchased the winery and lands and operated under its own label. The doors closed in August 1993 and the estate and vineyards lay fallow until 1996. Richard Lindner, Carl Lindner and Chris Bitter, whose families have lived in the Barossa for several generations, renovated the old buildings, wells and landscaped the grounds starting in 1996. The trio renovated the old winery and named it Langmeil after the original 1842 village.

Langmeil Barossa Family

Langmeil Barossa Today

A stone abandoned winery built in the midst of a deserted trading village of a bygone era, Langmeil Winery is now a revived and fascinating corner of Barossa wine and wine history. The Freedom Cellar, originally the cobbler's shop in the historic trading village, has opened its doors. The cellar has been lovingly restored using time-honoured artisan carpentry and bricklaying skills and is now the ultimate place to sample Langmeil's Old Vine Garden wines as part of an intimate winery and historic vineyard.

 Langmeil Barossa Winemaking

Langmeil Barossa Wines

Capturing the distinctive characteristics of the Barossa's rich terroirs is the foundation of each Langmeil wine, these are crafted with dedication and an individual style. In the winery, Head Winemaker Paul Lindner draws on both old and new world techniques, while practicing both minimal filtration and human intervention to ensure the grape's full potential is realised. Their grapes are:

  • Riesling
  • Chardonnay
  • Viognier
  • Marsanne
  • Roussanne
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Shiraz
  • Grenache
