Since the 1990s, innovative wines have been produced at Mulderbosch Vineyards, infused with the team’s love and passion. With multiple awards and recognition in the world of critics, this South African winery is a name well worth watching.

Wines from Mulderbosch

From swearword to international name

In 1989, Larry Jacobs acquired a farm that the locals called "Vuilplasie" – dirty little farm. Taking it as a challenge, he entered into a partnership with Sauvignon Blanc expert Mike Dobrovic and began clearing the land and planting vines. After building a small cellar, they were able to bring a Sauvignon Blanc and a Chardonnay to market. After gaining international recognition, Adam took over the winemaking in 2011. Mulderbosch Vineyards was the first winery in the country to introduce a barrel-fermented Chenin Blanc. Today, the estate is run by Henry Kotzé, Mick Craven and Werner Wessels.

Original from Stellenbosch

The Mulderbosch wines are produced from grapes sourced both from their own vineyards and from partner growers. With the exception of the Rosé Cabernet Sauvignon, the wines all come from the Stellenbosch region. The following varieties thrive in the vineyards:

  • Chardonnay
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Cabernet Franc
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Merlot
  • Malbec
  • Petit Verdot
  • Pinot Meunier

Two single-vineyard wines are also offered: a Chenin Blanc from False Bay and a Cabernet Franc from Mulderbosch. The False Bay site, with its cooler climate, contributes to more intense aromas and balanced acidity. The sites face south/southeast and are therefore somewhat cooler than others.

Panorama of the Mulderbosch vineyards

In the cellar at Mulderbosch Vineyards, temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks are used, alongside a selection of 500-liter wooden barrels for maturation. The Mulderbosch wines are produced so that they can be enjoyed immediately upon purchase, but they certainly have aging potential of 10–15 years.

Commitment

In addition to winegrowing, Mulderbosch Vineyards is also involved in environmental and social issues. It is a member of the sustainability initiative IPW (Integrated Production of Wine). The estate has its own water management system, planted 1,000 trees on its own land in 2018, for example, and holds WIETA certification for ethical practices.
