To carefully transfer the legacy of time-honored Chianti generations into the here and now is, on the one hand, a risk that should not be underestimated, but on the other hand, also an opportunity for departure, for something new and fresh.

Luca and Gionata Gattavecchi of the eponymous winery have taken on precisely this challenge with Poggio della Sala. The Gattavecchi siblings come from an ancient family of winemakers who themselves have run a highly respected winery in the center of Montepulciano for centuries, but when the perhaps even more traditional Poggio alla Sala winery came up for sale a few years ago, the Gattavecchis couldn't resist and bought it.

Enough history, a perfect cellar and old, perfectly situated vineyards were thus in place, for it is hard to imagine a more beautiful place, grown in the best sense of the word, than Poggio alla Sala. In the midst of almost 40 hectares of very well tended vineyards stands the 18th century villa, restored with much love, which today houses a luxurious spa resort.

Vineyard and cellar conservative in the best sense of the word

Poggio alla Sala represents the classic style of Tuscany. What does that mean exactly:

• few barriques
• no French or even American oak
• many large wooden barrels
• slavonian oak full of character
• Focus on Sangiovese
• no French grape varieties

In this way, the Gattavecchis produce wines that do not have a perfumed, vanilla note, but instead stand for tannins, backbone and body. In the vineyards, almost all of which overlook Montepulciano, there is actually only Canaiolo in addition to the autochthonous Prugnolo gentile (Sangiovese). Luca Gattavecchi perfectly brings the endearingly conservative character of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano into the bottle with the wines of Poggio alla Sala.
