Salzl Seewinkelhof Winegrowing Tradition in Burgenland
The family's winemaking tradition has deep roots. The Salzls have been growing wine since 1840. At that time still as mixed farming, Heribert Salzl, father of Josef and grandfather of Christoph, set the focus anew and as one of the few relatively early on pure viticulture. While Heribert mainly produced white and sweet wines, he was already able to cause a stir with several gold medals. In the 1980s, Josef laid the foundation for today's success by re-accentuating towards red wine. With the 2000 vintage, Josef Salzl made it into the top 50 red wines in Austria at the first attempt. Since 2005, his son Christoph has also been fully involved. He started with his first own wine - SAlzl ChRIStoph - SACRIS. A single-varietal Zweigelt, which still stands at the top of the quality pyramid in the winery today and impressively demonstrates what great wines this local variety can produce. Close exchange, reflection and discussion are important elements for successful and honest cooperation.
Salzl Seewinkelhof's location of the winery
Between the vines, as the address already reveals, lies the modern winery. When you look out over the incomparable natural landscape of the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park in Austria's easternmost province, it becomes clear that it is not only the vines that feel at home in Illmitz. Grandfather Heribert, father Josef and son Christoph with their family also enjoy life here. The decision for viticulture was a conscious one for all three of them. They love their home, as well as their vocation. The Salzls see it as their mission and goal to reflect the climate and vastness of the region in their products. While the classic wines are matured in stainless steel tanks, the reserve wines mature in barrique barrels. Viticulture is not just a living craft here. It is joy, experience and the best intuition that guide the Salzls to find the ideal match for each variety and each vintage.
Salzl Seewinkelhof's wine variety
At Salzls, the passion for their white, red and sweet wines is absolutely palpable. While a large part of the wine is red - especially Zweigelt, in addition to national and international varieties - the winery also offers the entire range of Burgenland wine culture at the highest level, from fresh and fruity to complex mineral white wines and noble sweet Prädikatswein.
Salzl Seewinkelhof's sun-ripened delights
Countless hours of sunshine ensure incomparable fruit and density. Even the worldwide rare Botrytis cinerea, a noble mould, indispensable for the production of noble sweet wines such as Trockenbeerenauslesen, can be found around Lake Neusiedl. With this selection, it is difficult to decide on one variety. Therefore, at Salzls, all vines are carefully and thoughtfully matched to soils, climate and sites and vinified according to their character. Rigorous selection and meticulous vineyard management are a matter of course. The result is a high-quality and colourful range of wines, where every palate is sure to find the right one. Salzl Seewinkelhof's vines in the mountains:

Salzl Seewinkelhof's soils
Each vine requires its own soil structure. Here at Lake Neusiedl, we find primarily sand, as in the Domkapitel site, washed up like dunes, permeable gravel, predominant in the Lüss site, and nutrient-rich weathered dark steppe black earth in the former shore area of the Pannonian Sea.
Salzl Seewinkelhof's teamwork
The family is supported by its long-standing team, which does excellent work in the vineyard, cellar and sales and shares the common philosophy. Like in an extended family, trust, responsibility, reliability and togetherness are lived here every day.
