Montalcino at its best - Tenuta di Sesta
The history of the Tenuta di Sesta took a decisive turn in 1850, when the estate became the property of the Giacci family. For centuries the Tenuta had been owned by the monastery of Sant Antimo, but now a new era is dawning, an era in which wine and olive oil are now being produced to the highest Tuscan standards in the fourth generation.
Brunello DOC - the noble dozen
Only 12 self-bottling wineries existed in Brunello in 1966, when the Brunello DOC was created. One of these 12 wineries was run by Giuseppe Giacci, the father of today's winery manager Giovanni Giacci. So, the Tenuta di Sesta is practically a bedrock in the Brunello wine growing region and one of the oldest wine estates of the Zona. As far as the style is concerned, Giovanni Giacci and the Tenuta di Sesta can neither be counted among the traditionalists, nor among the radical modernizers - here, they take the middle path and find the perfect balance in the wine.
Cultivated are
- Sangiovese
- Merlot
- Cabernet Franc
With Brunello, Giacci relies uncompromisingly on 100% Sangiovese, with the workhorse, the Rosso di Toscana, body and balance are ensured with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Today, Tenuta di Sesta has 35 hectares of vineyards, 14 of which are approved for Brunello. In the cellar, the young wine almost exclusively meets large wooden barrels, which ensure a slow maturation and a less dominant oak input. Only the Rosso di Toscana is partly aged in small barrels.
