Tenuta Tignanello

Tenuta Tignanello - Expression of the Antinori Philosophy

The Tenuta Tignanello winery is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, nestled between rolling hills and the Greve and Pesa rivers, only about 30 km from Florence. 319 hectares in size, 127 of which are planted with vineyards, including the single vineyard sites of Tignanello and Solaia, which produce two unique terroir wines from Marchesi Antinori.

Tenuta Tignanello and Marchesi Antinori

Since 1850, the estate with its Renaissance villa has belonged to the Antinori family. Historical documents show that in the Middle Ages the land belonged to a Buondelmonti family, like large parts of the Valle della Pesa. In the 17th century it fell to a branch of the Medici family and finally in the middle of the 19th century it came into the possession of the Antinori family. At that time the village of Tignanello was already renowned as one of the highest and most picturesque points of the entire area.

Terroir and innovation at Tenuta Tignanello

The vineyards are located at 350 to 400 m.a.s.l., the skeletal marl soils of Pliocene origin are rich in Albarese and Galestro, the local names for limestone and slate. The microclimate in this place has remarkable thermal excursions between day and night, giving unique characteristics to the grapes. In 127 there are many smaller plots, among which Tignanello and Solaia are renowned, the autochthonous grape variety Sangiovese is cultivated and the international grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which here become absolute terroir grape varieties. There are also plots of Malvasia and Trebbiano for Vinsanto production, and 37 hectares of olive groves.

Vineyards Tenuta Tignanello

Wine laboratory Tenuta Tignanello

In the 1970s, Tenuta Tignanello introduced new viticultural techniques and new grape varieties, planting density, pruning and selection of clones, but also innovations in the aging process, small barrels, a kind of "wine laboratory" in search of even more expressiveness, elegance, concentration and terroir.

World-renowned terroir wines from Tenuta Tignanello

Three red wines are produced at the winery, which are rightly considered among the most important in the history of Italian wine and enjoy an international reputation for being the best expression of terroir, each unique in its own way. The Vinsanto of the Tenute Marchese Antinori is also vinified at Tenuta Tignanello, and a grappa of the same name is distilled from the marc of the Tignanello.
