Oremus Tokaj

Tokaj Oremus - Even the Hungarian national anthem pays homage to Tokaj!

Already in the 15th century, the first Tokaji Aszú were pressed, and thus already about 200 years before the Sauternes and a whole century before the great noble sweet wines from the Rhine Valley! When in 1562 the Hungarian archbishop presented the noble sweet wine as a gift to Pope Pius IV, it caused a real euphoria among the greats, tsars and kings of the world.

Vinum regum, rex vinorum

The Vinum regum, rex vinorum (wine of kings, king of wines) written on the label of Oremus Aszú is said to have been proclaimed by Louis XIV, and Voltaire and Goethe also found inspiration in Aszú. At the end of the 19th century, however, the aszú experienced the abrupt (temporary) end of its success: phylloxera, World Wars I and II and the subsequent communist leadership left all production idle until around 1989, when, with the help of foreign investors, the Tokaji region succeeded in awakening from its slumber.

The Oremus Tokaj winery, founded in 1993, is one such cooperation between the famous Spanish bodega Vega Sicilia and the Hungarian state. With great success, Vega owner David Álvarez works in Tokaj with a group of Hungarian professionals for the common goal of continuing the centuries-old tradition and producing the best possible Aszú.

Things to know about Tokaj Oremus
Why is a wine called “Mandolás”?
The name comes from the Mandolás vineyard, which translates as “almond grove.” The site is named after the almond trees that grow there thanks to the warm microclimate. For the sweet Aszú wines, workers have to pick every single berry affected by noble rot individually by hand. An experienced picker manages only about 6 to 10 kg of these raisins per day. This number (e.g. 3, 5 or 6) indicates how many vats (Puttonyos) full of dried Aszú berries used to be added to a cask of base wine. The higher the number, the sweeter and more concentrated the wine. According to legend, the very first Aszú wine was pressed in 1630 from grapes of the Oremus vineyard for a noblewoman (Zsuzsanna Lorántffy). The estate is therefore regarded as the birthplace of the modern Tokaj style.
