Wine love over generations

The three fun-loving brothers Iñaki, Mikel and Xabier Sanz reach out to wine lovers all over the world, proving that terroir wines can be made in Navarre by leaving the conventional, learning to understand and, above all, respect nature.

The story of VIÑA ZORZAL began in 1989 when the father of the three brothers, Antonio Sanz, fulfilled a long-awaited dream after a long career in the wine industry. He began to produce his own wines in Navarra.

Reflection on the tried and tested

He soon realised what treasures there were in the region. And so striking parcels on the edge of the region were recultivated. One of these unique parcels is "Fitero". This survived the great phylloxera plague and the 115-year-old Garnacha bush vines are among the oldest in Navarre.

With this grape variety VIÑA ZORZAL succeeded in creating a rosé wine that is as authentic and uncomplicated as it would have been served in the times of the grandparents and still has the complexity of the old vines. The second distinctive parcel is "Corella". This is located on a plateau and the soil composition of limestone and clay provide an ideal mineral base for the wines. Here thrive especially the grape varieties

• Tempranillo
• Graciano and
•  Grenache.

In 2007 the sons took over VIÑA ZORZAL. For them, too, it is self-evident that the production of great wines does not only depend on the work in the cellar, but also on the careful care of the vines. 

A winery repositions itself

In 2014, VIÑA ZORZAL celebrated its 25th anniversary. The brothers took advantage of this for a time of reflection, giving the wines a new face and defining and reflecting on the vineyards with the creation of a new wine. Thus, the labels were adapted to the wines and now reflect their personality. The bird motif stands for the close-to-nature approach of the winery. Thereby are

• Green manuring
• Compost spreading
• and manual work in the vineyard

as well as the renunciation of fining or filtration, e.g. for red wines.

VIÑA ZORZAL is different and lively in the otherwise so uniformly structured wine-growing region of Navarra.
