Weingut am Stein - best sites around Würzburg

Weingut am Stein is located near Würzburg and specializes in the production of terroir-driven, individual wines. The winery relies on biodynamic cultivation of the vines to produce the best quality in harmony with nature. The winery is a member of the prestigious VDP winegrowers association.

The winery is managed by the Knoll family. The great-grandfather of the current owner, Ludwig Knoll, was a cooper who supplied barrels to wineries around Würzburg. in 1980, Ludwig's father established the current winery, which was taken over by Ludwig and his wife Sandra in 1990. Ludwig Knoll had studied viticulture and immediately began to convert the production method first to organic farming, and later to biodynamic farming. The work and ambition have paid off, so the winery has been increasingly mentioned in the trade press in recent years and has received several awards, including from Gerhard Eichelmann.

The biodynamic method of cultivation prescribes exactly how to proceed in the vineyard. For example, fertilizers are used only with natural means and plant protection is carried out, for which special preparations made from ingredients from nature are available. The rows of vines are also planted with vegetation, which promotes the soil fauna and contributes to a healthy vineyard.

The vineyards of the winery am Stein

The vineyards of Weingut am Stein are plots in the following locations

  • Inner slope
  • Würzburger Stein
  • Stettener Stein
  • Randersackerer Sonnenstuhl,

but also other vineyards in Thüngersheim.

Würzburg Stone

South exposed steep slope, which extends above the city. The slope ranges from 30% to 80%, the soils are characterized by shell limestone, which has occasional layers of clay and loam and has a good heat storage capacity. A wooded area at the top of the hill protects the vines from cold north winds.

Inner slope

Located below the former bishop's residence Marienberg, this vineyard has a special microclimate. Heat rises from the Würzburg basin, while the site on the south side of the mountain protects the vines from the cold north wind. It is one of the best sites in all of Franconia.

Stetten Stone

A Große Gewächs site, which lies 80 meters above the Main River and is shaped like a concave mirror. 50-80% slope provides good protection and exposure for the vines, which benefit from the rising heat. The topsoil is poor and a good heat reservoir, and the vines take root in the hard shell limestone of the mountain. Some of the estate's best wines come from this site.

Randersackerer Sonnenstuhl

Soils of shell limestone, clayey loam and humic sand characterize this vineyard. The vineyard has a slope of 70% and is interspersed with many retaining walls. It was first mentioned as early as 1240, so it is a very old vineyard rich in tradition.

Wine and brandy from the winery am Stein

The wines from Weingut am Stein breathe the philosophy of the winery: careful, decelerated and attentive work with the grape. Today, Weingut am Stein has two cellars at its disposal for the aging of its wines: the stone cellar and the barrel cellar. In the stone cellar there are concrete tanks and amphorae, which are used for aging, while in the barrel cellar, as the name suggests, the wood is waiting for the base wines to give them the finishing touch. There are small barriques as well as tonneaux and barrels, in order to have the right tools at hand depending on the wine and the phase of aging. For the special treasures of the winery, the Weingut am Stein has created a wine library where the best vintages bear witness.

The wine plant, conference building and winery

The wines of the house are classified according to the guidelines of the VDP winegrowers' association, so the winery produces estate wines, local wines, wines from the Erste Lage and wines from the Große Lage. In addition, there are special creations such as the Cuvée VINZ from old vines of different plots, noble sweet creations, sparkling wine and also some brandies from different types of fruit or pomace.
