The Weingut Robert Schlumberger is located in Bad Vöslau, south of Vienna. It is part of the large Austrian sparkling wine production company Schlumberger AG.

The Privatkeller by Robert Schlumberger

Winery Robert Schlumberger - how France came to Austria

Robert Schlumberger was the founder of Schlumberger AG, who turned to red wines after sparkling wines. He was the first winemaker to cultivate French grape varieties in Austria. Particularly important were

  • Merlot
  • Cabernet Sauvignon

These grape varieties are still the basis for the wines of the house today. Today the cellar is in the hands of Herbert Jagersberger, who is responsible for the two wines of the Weingut Robert Schlumberger.

Panorama of the Bad Vöslau area

The vineyards in Bad Vöslau

The grapes for the wines grow directly in Bad Vöslau, on the Goldeck, Hupfenberg and Oberkirchen sites. The sites are characterized by loam and brown earth soils, which are covered with gravel. The deeper layers also contain lime. 10 ha of the vineyards are reserved exclusively for the wine Privatkeller.

In the vineyards of Robert Schlumberger, the yield is deliberately reduced in order to keep the quality high, a maximum yield of 20 hl/ha is the limit. The grapes for the wines are picked by hand.

Step to the cellar

In the cellar, the wines are matured separately by parcel. The fermentation takes place in modern steel tanks. After about 8 days of maceration, the wine is put into barriques for maturation, one third of the barrels being made of new wood.

Grapes for Schlumberger wines

The wine is aged for 8 months and then transferred to large wooden barrels, where it rests for another 9 months. This is followed by bottling, after which the wine is finally aged for 13 months before being put on sale.

Private cellar and Privatissimo

In addition to Privatkeller, the flagship wine of the House of Robert SchlumbergerPrivatissimo is also produced. This wine is a bit simpler and is only aged in barrique for 4 months. The wines of the winery are regular guests in press publications such as the Falstaff-Guide, A la Carte or the Gault & Millau, where they are often awarded prizes.
