Riesling im Glas

A journey of discovery along the Moselle: a feast for all the senses

The first ray of spring sunshine

Imagine the first warm rays of spring sunshine gently caressing your face. That feeling when the cold, gray winter blanket is replaced by the vibrant energy of spring. This awakening is reflected in every glass of Riesling from the Moselle. A wine that makes the hearts of wine lovers beat faster with its history, character and diversity.

A sip of German winemaking history

Riesling, a noble grape with a history as rich and complex as its taste. Riesling is at home everywhere in Germany, but it has developed an unmistakable style especially in the Rheingau and on the Moselle - where the steep slate slopes and the special microclimate bring its aromas to full bloom.

The growing region: steep terroir, special soils

The Moselle is home to some of the steepest vineyards in the world. Only the Douro Valley in Portugal and Priorat in Catalonia have vineyards with a similarly perfect exposure to the sun. What these areas also have in common is the slate soil - one of the most characterful substrates for vines in the world! The decisive difference is that it is much hotter in the Iberian vineyards, which is of course rarely good for the aromas, especially with white grape varieties.

The Moselle, on the other hand, combines a cool climate with plenty of sunshine for the vines. The result is bright aromas, especially notes of white peach, citrus fruit, apples of all kinds, light stone fruit, white flowers, occasionally also sun-warmed straw and often mineral nuances of warm slate, graphite or flint.

Enjoy the variety

Riesling from the Moselle comes in countless varieties. The reason for this is the many vineyard sites. As the Moselle constantly winds its way through the landscape, the angle of the vineyard to the sun often changes. Some are perfectly south-facing, others more east or west-facing. This results in more or less full, elegant wines. Close to the river, the wines are usually more opulent; high up in the vineyard, cooled by the wind, they are usually leaner.

Winegrowers also like to play with the characteristics of Riesling in the ageing process. Few grape varieties balance sweetness so perfectly with vital acidity. This means that the winemaker can usually leave much more sugar in the wine without it tasting sweet or even cardboardy and candy-like. A huge advantage over other grape varieties and growing regions.
