Apothic Wines or what the pharmacy has to do with wine

Apothic Wines is a Californian wine brand under whose name characterful red wine cuvées are vinified. The brand belongs to the Californian Gallo Winery, one of the largest wine producers in the world. The name Apothic comes from the Latin apotheca , which simply means store. The word apothecary also originated here, as a storehouse for medicine. And just as you can store medicine, you can do the same with wine, which is sometimes said to have health-promoting properties. 

California - the heart of American wine

California is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in America and also the largest. In the wine world, the wines from the West Coast have gained a firm place because of their quality, some of the most famous wines that compete with the great French come from here. Most of the viticulture is concentrated in the coastal regions of the state, as well as the Central Valley.

California's soils are very diverse, not least because of the clash of the Pacific and North American plates. Different soil types can occur in the same vineyard, giving the region's wines great diversity.

A dark note

The goal of the winemakers behind Apothic Wines is to create wines with character, which at the same time appeal to a broad mass. For this purpose, vintner Debbie Juergenson relies on the peculiarities of the single sorts of grape, which are included in the Apothic wines. Among them, there are the ones typical for California:

• Cabernet Sauvignon
• Merlot
• Primitivo
• Shiraz

but also "specialities" like Durif or Teroldego.

So, today, they have created the extraordinary Apothic Red and Dark cuvees, one fruity, the other rather tart. The gothic charm of the labels, which harks back to the dark, mysterious Middle Ages, gives the wines a further unique selling point. An ideal companion for a historical evening or the next scary movie!
