An adventurous and rugged area
Even in the distance, you can spot the magical bizarre rock formations on the horizon. Caves, gorges, crystal clear streams and snow-capped peaks can be found about 200 kilometers northeast of Cape Town. The Nieuwoudt family settled in this breathtaking landscape in the mid-19th century. At an altitude of 950 to 1100 meters are the vineyards of Gut Cederberg. These are among the highest in South Africa.
in 1893, the Nieuwoudtfamily moved to the Dwarsrivier farm, also known as the Cederberg private winery and Sanddrif resort.

No one expected it
No one from the Nieuwoudt family expected that six generations later, the Cederberg Winery would become a high-altitude, award-winning wine farm in the Cape Winelands. The winery is located in the "Cederberg Wilderness Area" and only 66 hectares of it is under vine.
Today, Cederberg is run by the fifth generation,David Nieuwoudt. The sixth generation with daughter Emma is already ready. In the wine cellar David is assisted by winemakers Alex Nel (responsible for white wine) and Tammy-Turck-Nel (responsible for red wine).

Cederberg Private Cellar's Wines
The Private Cellar's wine line is the focus. Cederberg has 66 hectares of vineyards at its disposal, planted with red and white wine in a 50:50 ratio . The following grape varieties are cultivated by Cederberg:
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Chenin Blanc
- Bukettraube
- Chardonnay (for sparkling wines)
- Viognier (as blend component)
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Shiraz
- Merlot (for the Merlot Shiraz blend)

The terrain is rugged and results in grapes that are small in size but have a high concentration of aromas. The vines grow on diverse soil types - from sandstone and decomposed gravel to red shale and clay. Thanks to the harsh winters and isolated location, the wines are protected from infestation and disease.
