David & Nadia - two people - one dream

The David & Nadia winery is located in Malmesbury in South Africa's Western Cape wine region. The estate is actually named Paardebosch and is run by the couple whose names are found in the brand.

The two met while they were in college. At the time, David was studying viticulture and enology, and Nadia was studying viticulture and soil science. they finally married in 2009 and produced their first wine together in 2010. At the time, they were still employees at another company. David went into business for himself in 2013, and Nadia followed him to the winery in 2016. Today, the two live together with their sons Wilhelm and Malan and their farm dog Tarzan at Paardebosch.

Region and wine in Swartland

Half of the grapes used by David & Nadia come from Paardebosch Farm. The other half comes from partner farms in the Swartland region, where Paardebosch is located. This gives them a selection of grapes from different terroirs, allowing them to put together a broad portfolio.

Typically, the vines in the region tend to be older and are not trained on wire frames, so they tend to grow more bush-like. Unlike other wine regions in South Africa, the soil in the Swartland is largely able to retain water so well that irrigation is not necessary. However, the water deposits are so deep that the vines need very long roots to reach them. This results in drought-resistant plants that produce highly concentrated, high-quality grapes. The region's viticultural methodology is mainly inspired by the French Rhône Valley, so it's wonderful to draw comparisons between New and Old World.

The wines of David & Nadia

In the cellar, David & Nadia use a minimal intervention approach to retain as much of the character and expression of the terroir as possible. Three lines of wine are produced from the grapes:

  • David & Nadia - Grapes from all over Swartland, a representation of Swartland as a whole. Grape varieties used include Chenin Blanc, Grenache and Elpidios.
  • Topography - only grapes from the Siebritskloof site on the Pardeberg, where the farm is located. Among others Pinotage and Sémillon are vinified here
  • Singe Vineyards - Chenin Blancs from selected single vineyard sites, for example: Skaliekop and Hoë-Steen
