Elena Walch - the Donna del Vino of South Tyrol
Elena Walch, who had actually learned the profession of architect, has been putting all her energy into her own vineyards since 1985, because "good wine does not grow on its own", says Elena. Today, the lateral entrant has not only an excellent base line, but also the two South Tyrolean cru top locations Castel Ringberg and Kastelaz. Both of them are now 100% owned by the Walch family.
Elena Walch is attached to the tradition of South Tyrolean winegrowing, but she stands with both feet on the ground of South Tyrolean reality. Modern technology and uncompromising innovation in vineyards and cellars have always been important to her. Bit by bit, the pergolas planted with Vernatsch were therefore cleared for the benefit of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet and Merlot vines planted after modern Guyot cultivation.
Low yields, flawless grapes and a particularly gentle vinification of the wines with the targeted use of wood produce particularly focused, fruity and elegant white wines with a fine varietal typicity.
But Elena Walch is not only a white wine, but also red wine like the 1x1st full-bodied and harmonious red wines from South Tyrol, true power packs with manners, are the result. Above Lake Caldaro, at an altitude of 380 m, is Castel Ringberg, the estate of the Walch family and the largest connected vineyard in South Tyrol. The Pitorresque Renaissance castle, built in the 17th century by the Habsburgs, is surrounded by 20 hectares of vineyards. Not only international grape varieties are growing here, the autochthonous Lagrein has also been newly planted.
