The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is definitely one of the best red wines of the wine-growing country Italy. As one of the three major Sangiovese wines from the town of Montepulciano, the Sangiovese grape must make up the largest proportion in a Vino Nobile with at least 70%, white grape varieties may find their way into the wine to a maximum of 5%.
The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wines have been DOCG certified since 1980 and probably owe their noble name to Pope Paul III, who came from Montepulciano and had the wine reserved for himself.
