Jakob Schneider - traditional viticulture on the Nahe river

The Jakob Schneider winery is one of the most traditional wineries in the small village of Niederhausen in the Nahe wine region. The family has lived and farmed here since 1575, and the current era began in 1901, when the Schneiders focused on the production of high-quality wines from steep slopes. The winery has always been a family project, currently 3 generations of the family live here together. Jakob Schneider Junior is in charge, his wife Laura takes care of the marketing and commercial side of the family business. In addition, Monika Schneider takes care of the logistics, grandma Liesel is the first contact and hostess for the customers of the winery. With Johanna and Julia, the next generation of the family is also growing up.

The vineyards of Jakob Schneider

The winery has 18 hectares of vineyards, which are shared by the following grape varieties:

• Riesling 85 %
• Burgundy varieties 10%
• other grape varieties 5 %, for example Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Silvaner

Best sites for top wines

The Nahe winegrowing region is a former volcanic region, which today has a high diversity of soil formations due to its changeable history. The terroir is mainly characterized by volcanic rock, with occasional slate and river sediments in the vineyards. 5 high class sites are available to Jakob Schneider to produce high quality wines:

• Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle - steep southern slope with slate and volcanic soils, dry and noble sweet premium wines
• Niederhäuser Klamm - shaped like a parabolic mirror, therefore very warm and well suited for noble sweet wines, porphyry rock characterizes the vineyard
• Niederhäuser Rosenheck - steep slope with southwest exposure, slate soils, Pinot Noir and Riesling thrive here
• Niederhäuser Felsensteyer - vineyard planted with Riesling, the soils consist of fine earth and melaphyre
• Norheimer Dellchen - easily heated volcanic rock and slate characterize this site, strong terracing, resulting in a ripening advantage for the grapes

From the vineyard to the cellar

The wines of the Jakob Schneider winery are divided into 3 classes: Estate wines, site wines and premium wines. While the first two classes are more fruit-driven and are bottled in the spring, the premium wines are left to develop their best potential. For the fermentation is done exclusively by the grape's own yeasts. For aging, modern stainless steel is used, and for the more premium wines, the large oak barrel is also used. There is something for every type of taste, so there are white, red and rosé wines, and also a sparkling wine can be found in the portfolio.
