What makes the “Lafóa” project so special?

It was the starting signal for South Tyrol’s quality revolution in the 1980s. At the time, managing director Luis Raifer replaced yield with quality by introducing new grape varieties and radical yield restriction in the Lafóa vineyard. Today, these wines stand worldwide for the highest elegance and aging potential.

Is Schreckbichl a family-run business or a cooperative?

It is a cooperative winery that now unites around 300 winegrowing families. The special feature: despite its size, the estate works with the precision of a small winery, since each family tends its parcels like its own garden.

How sustainable is the winery’s work really?

Schreckbichl relies on a holistic “green philosophy” concept. The building is almost energy self-sufficient (photovoltaics and heat recovery), and a large proportion of the vineyards is cultivated according to strict organic guidelines in order to preserve biodiversity in the Überetsch area.

Which grape variety is the estate’s flagship?

Although the range is broad, Schreckbichl is considered a master of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The white wines in particular benefit from the enormous temperature differences between day and night in the sites around Girlan, which give them their characteristic freshness.

Schreckbichl was founded in 1960 in South Tyrol, where the harmony of opposites is unique, where north and south, the German-speaking and Italian worlds meet. Snow-covered mountains and fertile valleys create a breathtaking climate between the Mediterranean and the Alps, forming a harmonious symbiosis. This gives rise to an exciting microcosm that produces characterful wines. In the southern part of the region, about 10 kilometers from the capital city of Bolzano, lies the Überetsch and the municipality of Appiano directly on the Wine Road. A fascinating hilly landscape from the last Ice Age, dotted with picturesque villages. Appiano on the Wine Road itself is the largest contiguous wine-growing area in South Tyrol.

One of the best-known and oldest wine villages in South Tyrol is Cornaiano on the Wine Road. Schreckbichl is a small district on the edge of Cornaiano and can also look back on an ancient winegrowing history. As early as around 1200, its sites and its wine were mentioned under the name “vinum schrechpuhlensis”. The village of Schreckbichl is the namesake of the winery, as all the founding members came from Schreckbichl. They do not look back on a long history, and they are not a family-run business. They are one of the youngest wineries in South Tyrol and behind the winery there is not one but 300 families. They work in the vineyards all year round – some only as a sideline – and every autumn they deliver their valuable, hand-harvested grapes.

Over 300 winegrowers form a unit and come together in the Schreckbichl winery. With their families and friends, they work all year round in their vineyards in order to deliver their valuable grapes to the winery in autumn. The cellar masters then refine these into outstanding wines, which either continue to rest or are bottled.
