Knobloch - Organic wine from Rheinhessen

The Knobloch winery is located in Oberflörsheim in Rheinhessen and is entirely dedicated to organic viticulture. It is managed by Ralf Knobloch, Dipl.-Ing. for viticulture, who is responsible for the oenology, his wife Sabine Knobloch, who is in charge of the administration and Ralf's brother Arno, who is in charge of the vineyard as master winemaker. The winery is a member of ECOVIN, the federal association for organic viticulture.

The vineyards of the Knobloch Winery

Approximately 30 hectares of vineyard are available to the winery in the Oberflörsheim area. The vineyard sites have different terroirs and are accordingly planted differently:

• Westhofener Morstein: calcareous soils, Riesling and Burgundy varieties grow here
• Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen: also characterized by limestone, Riesling and Burgundy grow here
• Eppelsheimer Felsen: loess loam and lime marl, Burgundy varieties
• Esselborner Goldberg: loamy sand, the winery's red wine site

In total, the winery comes to 150,000 vines that must be cared for. If this is already such a large number, the effort required in organic viticulture is even greater, since many simplifying measures, for example in plant protection, are not permitted. Pruning in winter as well as the removal of excess shoots is self-evident for the preservation of high quality. In the cellar, specially selected yeasts are used to minimize the distortion of the character of the wines. Fermentation is thermoregulated, and small wooden barrels are available for the aging of higher quality wines.

The great effort for the wine production is worthwhile, the estate is often mentioned in leading publications of the wine world such as Feinschmecker, Gault-Millau, Vinum or the Eichelmann wine guide. Knobloch wines are also regularly represented among the best organic wines selected by ECOVIN. The estate produces white wines, rosé wines, red wines, sparkling wines and sparkling wines. Whether dry, residual sweet wines, with or without barrel aging - in the assortment of Knobloch there is something for everyone.
