More information about Merlot Reserve - Vergelegen
The Vergelegen Merlot Reserve brings an excellent red wine to the glass. It reveals a wonderfully dense, ruby red color. When held slightly tilted, there is a transition of the shade towards garnet red at the edges. Swirling the wine glass reveals a high viscosity, which is evident in the "legs" on the rim. In the nose of this red wine from the Coastal Region appellation, we perceive notes of various red and black berry fruits, complemented by spicy nuances. On the palate, the Merlot Reserve from Vergelegen starts delightfully aromatic, fruit-driven, and balanced. The fruit acidity of the Merlot Reserve is pleasantly mild, making this wine wonderfully smooth. The finish of this aged red wine from the Coastal Region winegrowing area finally impresses with considerable length.
Vinification of the Vergelegen Merlot Reserve
The basis for the powerful Merlot Reserve from Coastal Region is grapes from the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. A significant influence on the ripening of the grapes is the fact that the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot grapes thrive in a warm climate. This is reflected in particularly well-ripened grapes and a relatively high alcohol content in the wine. After handpicking, the grapes are quickly taken to the winery. Here, they are sorted and gently crushed. This is followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. After fermentation, aging takes place for several months on the fine lees before the wine is finally bottled.
