It is divided into the four districts of Worcester, Robertson, Swellendam, and Breedekloof and has a total cultivation area of around 30,000 hectares. Almost 40% of South Africa's wine production, predominantly white wine, comes from here. The wine is produced partly by large cellars or cooperatives around Worcester and many smaller businesses around Robertson and other towns. In terms of quantity, the area around Worcester accounts for 30% of the total, representing the lion's share among the four districts.

Wine growing in the Breede River Valley dates back to the 19th century, beginning nearly two centuries later than in the rest of South Africa. Here, by the way, it was mainly German settlers who established the first vineyards alongside their fruit orchards, laying the foundation for today's production.

Wine Region Breede River Valley

In the Breede River Valley with its four cultivation areas, around 40% of all South African wines are produced, most of which are made from white grapes such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Colombard. For red wines, the local winemakers focus on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinotage, and Ruby Cabernet.

Soils and Climatic Conditions for Breede River Valley Wine

The various altitudes and terrains of limestone and slate allow for the cultivation of a wide range of grape varieties and corresponding wine qualities. The flat and riverbank regions typically produce simpler wines for mass consumption, while the hilly areas and foothills of the Cape Fold Belt are reserved for vines producing high-quality wines, including some of the best wines from South Africa.

The climate in the region is consistently hot and dry in the summer and requires artificial irrigation of the vineyards in many places. In contrast, the winter months are cool and usually bring adequate rainfall - overall good conditions for Breede River Valley wine.

Grape Varieties in the Breede River Valley Wine Region

The main varieties for white wine are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Colombard, and Chenin Blanc. Among the red wines, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinotage, Ruby Cabernet, and Merlot are predominant. However, part of the production does not go into bottles for consumers but is used as base wine for distillation.

A Popular Destination for Wine Tourists - Breede River Valley

Those who want to personally experience the wine world in the region should embark on the well-known and popular Route R62, which runs through the river valley. Alongside wonderful landscapes and vineyards on both sides, numerous producers can be found along it or in close proximity. Almost all winemakers and cellars offer tastings and direct sales of wine from the Breede River Valley.

South Africa Focuses on Quality Wines

In 1973, a quality wine system was introduced in South Africa, based on appellations. These wines may bear the designation "Wine of Origin" (WO). They are defined by the location of the vineyard, the selected grape variety, the work in the vineyard, and the winemaking technique. The Wine-of-Origin regulations govern all these factors. The corresponding seal guarantees the accuracy of the information regarding origin, vintage, and the grape varieties used. The South African Wine and Spirit Board is responsible for controlling the regulations and certifying WO wines.

Additionally, there is the regional classification "Estate Wine". At VINELLO, you will find many white, red, and rosé wines from the Breede River Valley with this designation. It guarantees that a wine was grown and vinified by a registered winemaker on a specific estate. Therefore, the designation Estate Wine can also be seen as a quality seal.

For sparkling wines produced using the French Champagne method (Méthode Champenoise), since 1992, the designation Methode Cap Classique or short Cap Classique serves as a quality seal. A pioneer in this segment is the internationally recognized winemaker Graham Beck, who produces very high-quality sparkling wines in the Breede River Valley and is also represented with several varieties in VINELLO's online shop.
