In the 16th century, missionaries began to plant the first vines at elevations over 1600 m above sea level. However, it wasn’t until the 19th century that commercial viticulture began in Salta. Approximately 4000 hectares are cultivated in the region. Overall, however, this only represents a fraction of the vineyard areas in Argentina.

While the wines produced in the early days of viticulture in Salta initially lacked balance and finesse, there has been a fundamental change in the region in the 21st century. These include, for example, Michel Torino's Bodega El Esteco and Bodega Vasija Secreta. One of the oldest wineries is Bodega Etchart, which has been in operation since 1850 and produces excellent Torrontés.

What is the Climate Like in Salta?

The climate in the Salta region is overall dry and warm. Precipitation occurs almost exclusively between January and March. The dry climate requires artificial irrigation of the vineyards. As altitude increases, not only does the air become thinner, but the temperature differences between day and night also increase. Additionally, the sunlight at high altitudes is particularly strong, leading to the development of concentrated and full-bodied wines.

What are the Soils Like in the Salta Wine Region?

The soils in the valleys are predominantly alluvial soils. They are continuously formed by sediment carried by the rivers and the impact of the winds. The soil profile ranges from sandy-stony in the higher elevations to sandy-loamy in the lower regions. The gravelly soils are characterized by good drainage. The pH value of the soils averages 7-7.5. The mostly sandy soil composition facilitates irrigation management.

Which Grape Varieties Are Grown in the Province of Salta?

The region is primarily known for the white grape Torrontés Riojano. However, red varieties also thrive exceptionally well in the high altitude.
