Stellenrust

One of the largest still family-run wineries in South Africa is Stellenrust in the Stellenbosch wine region. Wine has been produced here since 1928. Generation after generation has worked on the estate’s progress, and today they can reap the fruits of their own hard work.

In addition to its own wine, Stellenrust has recently started offering other wineries the opportunity to have their grapes vinified there and sold under their own name. From this service, the winery’s own JJ Handmade wine range emerged, which is produced entirely by hand, with no machine coming near the wine. Stellenrust likes to call this its “French influence”.

The Golden Triangle of Stellenrust

Half of the vineyards of Stellenrust lie in the “Golden Triangle”, a subregion of Stellenbosch from which some of South Africa’s best red wines come. The other half is located in the Bottelary Hills, whose cool climate and fresh sea air provide wonderful conditions for white wines.

Today, the wines of Stellenrust are divided into four quality levels:

• Kleine Rust
• Premium
• Super Premium
• Ultra Premium

These include wines made from typical South African grape varieties such as Pinotage, Shiraz, and Sauvignon Blanc. But there is also a Muscat as well as sparkling wines.

Social commitment of Stellenrust

In 2005, the owners of Stellenrust decided to share their success with their long-standing team and to do something to combat the consequences of apartheid, which lasted until 1994. They made their predominantly coloured workforce the main shareholders of a quarter of their own vineyard area and remain proud to this day of this highly successful step.
