Syrah - Bilancia

The barrel-aged Syrah from the wine-growing region of New Zealand’s North Island presents itself in the glass in a bright purple red. The first nose of the Syrah flatters with nuances of plums and blackberries. The fruity components of the bouquet are joined by notes from barrel aging, such as additional fruity-balsamic nuances.

On the palate, Bilancia’s Syrah opens pleasantly dry, firm and aromatic. There is dry, and then there is really dry. This red wine belongs to the latter group, as it was bottled with just 0.1 g of residual sugar. On the palate, the texture of this well-balanced red wine is wonderfully dense. Thanks to its vibrant acidity, the Syrah reveals itself on the palate as delightfully fresh and lively. On the finish, this red wine from the New Zealand North Island wine-growing region, which has good aging potential, finally delights with considerable length. Once again, hints of plum and blackberry appear. In the aftertaste, mineral notes from the gravel-dominated soils are added.

Vinification of the Syrah from Bilancia

This well-balanced red wine from New Zealand is vinified from the Syrah grape variety. The grapes grow close to the river on New Zealand’s North Island. Here, the vines sink their roots deep into gravel soils. Due to the balancing influence of the nearby river, the grapes ripen more slowly and develop greater aromatic complexity. Once perfect physiological ripeness is ensured, the grapes for the Syrah are harvested exclusively by hand, without the use of rough and less selective mechanical harvesters. After harvesting, the grapes reach the winery as quickly as possible. There they are selected and gently crushed. This is followed by fermentation in small wooden barrels at controlled temperatures. After fermentation, the wine is matured for several months on the fine lees before it is finally drawn off.

Food recommendation for the Syrah from Bilancia

Ideally, enjoy this red wine from New Zealand, served at 15–18°C, as an accompanying wine to stuffed bell peppers, fried calf’s liver with apples, onions and balsamic sauce, or goose breast with ginger red cabbage and marjoram.
