The Jung & Knobloch Winery

The family has been growing grapes in the Rheinhessen region for 200 years. Sustainability and resource conservation are at the top of the agenda. The stylized wine press that adorns the Jung & Knob loch logo is based on the wine press that Konrad Knobloch bought in 1813 and that still stands on the farm today and is the family's landmark.

Wine tasting at Jung and Knobloch

Respect for man and nature is demonstrated at Jung & Knob loch by the following aspects, among others:

  • Ecology: no use of insecticides, use of lightweight glass bottles, production and use of green electricity, fallow areas with bee meadows, use of recycled paper, membership of FAIR'N GREEN since 2018
  • Social: training company, employer for people without completed training, involvement in local associations
  • Economy: resource-saving and energy-efficient management, purchasing from regional traders, innovative and ecological further development, grape reception in free fall without pumping, must cooling with 70% savings compared to the usual refrigerating machine

The vineyards of Knobloch & Jung

The Knobloch & Jung vineyard in the heart of Rheinhessen has 21 grape varieties planted on 54 hectares of vines.

The soils

The soils in Rheinhessen are shaped by the shell limestone of the Tertiary period 20 million years ago, when the area was covered by the primeval sea. Today, these limestone deposits form the basis for Knobloch & Jung's mineral wines. Later, loess, clay and drifting sand were deposited on top of this limestone layer, which is responsible for the richness of the wines. In some places, wind and rain expose the so-called Rotliegende.

The climate

Rheinhessen enjoys a particularly mild climate, sheltered between the Odenwald, Taunus, Hunsrück and Palatinate forests, which protect it from wind and rain. The region is only open to the south, hence the mild, warm climate.

The vineyards

The various sites of the Knobloch & Jung winery are characterized by a wide variety of soils, different levels of sunlight and slopes. The result is a variety of wines for every taste.

  • Albiger Hundskopf: south-western slope open to the wind with a gradient of up to 45° and optimal sun exposure, calcareous soil with rich clay content as an optimal water and heat reservoir, the wines from here are mineral with a lot of body and storage potential
  • Albiger Schloss Hammerstein: first documented in 767, soils with a lot of limestone, microclimatic conditions, wines with harmonious and stable acidity, fine minerality and ripe fruit
  • Spiesheimer Osterberg: south-facing slope protected from the north and west with excellent microclimatic conditions, soil of deep clay marl, elegant wines with fine fruit and pronounced density
