The history

Margrave Hermann II from the Zähringer dynasty was the first to be awarded the title "Markgraf von Baden" in 1112. The MargravialBaden Wine House is connected with this name. Winegrowing has a long tradition in the house, as it has been connected with Markgraf von Baden from the very beginning. For many centuries, the house has been cultivating some of the best vineyards in Baden, such as Staufenberg Castle and the surrounding estates, which the house has owned since 1693. The former Salem Monastery with its large vineyards has also been part of the family's holdings since 1802.

Quality winegrowing as a tradition

It was Margrave Christoph von Baden who initiated the first vineyard as early as 1495. Margrave Carl Friedrich then devoted himself to the latest methods of wine production in 1782, endeavoring to conduct research and train young winemakers. From then on, he is regarded as the founder of quality viticulture in Baden. The introduction of the Gutedel in Baden can also be traced back to him, as well as the planting of pure Riesling around Schloss Staufenberg, from now on called "Klingelberger", which today stands symbolically for exquisite Riesling from the Ortenau.

Company philosophy

The motto of the Markgraeflich Badisches Weinhaus is "Fidelitas". It stands for the commitment to tradition, nature and the soil. The soil is considered the most important asset and must be preserved and cultivated. The aim is to interfere with nature as little as possible and to get the best out of the vines. Year after year, the Markgräflich Badische Weinhaus passes on this valuable knowledge to apprentices from Germany and abroad. With this quality standard, the house is a member of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP). In order to be accepted here, winemakers and wineries must meet strict quality criteria. This is checked again every 5 years. This is accompanied by the obligation to carry out every single step from the vineyard to the bottle themselves. The Markgräflich Badische Weinhaus cultivates some of the best vineyards in Germany, is committed to traditional grape varieties and gentle processing. It is not produced in mass but in quality.

Salem Castle

Salem Castle is not only a winery, but also a family estate. It is one of the most impressive cultural monuments on Lake Constance. It has been in the family since 1802. Today it is home to the winery Markgraf von Baden  and is inextricably linked to viticulture.

The wines from Lake Constance are vinified, stored, tasted and sold at Salem Castle. There is a main cellar and a prelature cellar (wooden barrel cellar).

Staufenberg Castle

The steep slopes of the Staufenberg in the Ortenau are inextricably linked with viticulture. The name Staufenberg is derived from the Old High German word "Stauf" and means something like "cone-shaped mountain". Viticulture here dates back to at least the 14th century, probably even further. Here, Margrave Carl Friedrich von Baden also cultivated Riesling in pure culture for the first time in 1782 in the Klingelberg.

Since 2012, gastronome Dominic Müller from Hotel Ritter has been a cooperation partner at Schloss Staufenberg. Thanks to him, you can not only enjoy excellent wines here, but also genuine Baden cuisine.
