St. Antony Winery - A Successful Collective

The St. Antony winery has officially existed since 1920, the first vintage produced was the 1918. The name St. Antony, which the winery received in the 1980s, goes back to the St. Antony ironworks, the first ironworks in the Ruhr area. The winery was founded by the "Guten Hoffnungshütte" in Nierstein. Since 1990, St. Antony has been a member of the Association of Prädikat Wine Estates, and since 2006, they have been working here in a certified organic manner. Since 2018, St. Antony has been Demeter-certified.

In 2005, the Meyer family around investor Detlev Meyer bought the St. Antony w inery, since then, the winery has been family-owned. At first, Felix Peters brought the winery further up as managing director, later Dirk Würtz took over.

The old Nierstein Freiherr Heyl zu Herrnsheim wine estate also belonged to Detlev Meyer. In 2008, this winery was officially dissolved, the name exists meanwhile only as a brand of St. Antony Weingut GmbH & Co. KG.

St Antony Location Nierstein Orbel

The vineyards of St. Antony

The 60 hectares of vineyards of the St. Antony winery are primarily located on the Niersteiner Roter Hang. Of these, 15 hectares are steep slopes. St. Anton y's portfolio includes the vineyards Pettenthal, Orbel, Hipping and Ölberg. Two monopollages are also owned by the Rhine-Hessian winery, namely Brudersberg and Zehnmorgen.

The St. Antony sites in detail

  • Pettentahl: here St. Anton y owns just under 10 hectares of vines, making them the largest owner of the Pettentahl site. The slopes lean towards the Rhine in a south-easterly direction, they are the steepest slopes in Rheinhessen, the vines grow here on red slate rock, there is sun until the evening hours.
  • Brudersberg: the 1.3 ha Brudersberg was in the sole possession of Heyl zu Herrnsheim since 1832. After the dissolution of this estate, the site passed into the ownership of St. Antony in 2006. The monopollage has a continuous southern exposure, is extremely steep and is under the direct influence of the Rhine. The wines from Brudersberg are characterized by fine minerality, elegance and longevity.
  • Hipping: St. Antony owns about 2 hectares of vines from this site, including the valuable north-facing section of the site. The Große Gewächs of St. Antony comes from the Käferberg, a special north-facing part of Hipping.
  • Zehnmorgen: at the foot of the Roter Hang is the monopollage Zehnmorgen with 2 hectares, which belongs solely to the St. Antony estate. The vines grow here on limestone rocks with a high clay content. The site has never been altered, neither the composition of the soil nor the exposure.
  • Orbel: the Orbel site is located at the southern end of the Rote Hang and a little away from the Rhine. The vines grow here on slate gravel. The side valley in which the Orbel site is located acts as a corridor at night through which the Rhine draws in cool air from the surrounding countryside, resulting in cool night temperatures. This coolness preserves the acidity in the wine.
  • Paterberg: 6 hectares of the windy Kalkberg can call St. Antony its own. The Paterberg is found in the south of Nierstein, with west and north-west exposure. The wines grow here on limestone soils, the wind blows almost permanently and very strongly. The Pinot Noir in particular feels at home here.

The production

Since 2019, the St. Antony winery has been farmed exclusively by hand. It is farmed completely organically, which means, among other things, that only organic fertilizer is used, weeds are removed mechanically. Harmful insects are repelled by means of sex pheromones. In this way, everything remains natural and soil and biodiversity intact.

In the cellar, too, the work continues in a minimally invasive way to preserve the terroir in the wine. The St. Antony wines ferment spontaneously and are given the time they need to develop their full potential.
