The Western Cape is divided into the four wine-growing regions of Breede River Valley, Coastal Region, Olifants River, and Little Karoo (Klein Karoo), as well as several other districts and areas that are not assigned to any specific region. Winemaking Tradition in the Western Cape

The history of winemaking in the Western Cape dates back to 1655, when the first vines were planted by Dutch settlers in the province. Later, French Huguenots, who had to leave their homeland, brought their extensive knowledge and European vines to the country, giving a significant boost to viticulture in the Western Cape and South Africa in general. Like many other regions in the world, the Western Cape was struck by the great phylloxera plague in the 19th century, which nearly brought winemaking to a standstill. It wasn't until 1918 that things began to improve again through the initiative and vigorous efforts of Charles Kohler. Kohler took great care in organizing and regulating winemaking. His regulations are still valid today, albeit expanded.

Due to the temperate maritime climate with plenty of warmth and sunshine, the area between the mountain ranges of the Cape Fold Belt and the two oceans is particularly well-suited for producing fine wines.
