The Alentejo is not only one of the largest but also one of the most important wine regions in Portugal: the region covers a third of the entire country. Yet for a long time, it was known only for its impressive oak forests and vast grain fields.

Alentejo at a glance

The Alentejo is an important wine area in Portugal. Although the wine history of the region began with the ancient Romans, Alentejo wine has only really become fashionable in the last thirty years. The area is characterized by a warm to hot climate and an excellent terroir of rocky, limestone soils.

The long history of Alentejo wine

Portuguese wine in antiquity

The Phoenicians were already cultivating wine in the Alentejo. Later, the Romans conquered the area and named it "Lusitania." They successfully applied their winegrowing experience in the Alentejo and benefited from the unique microclimate of the region. However, after the collapse of Roman rule, viticulture in the Alentejo was neglected for many centuries.

Instead, the Portuguese region became known for grain cultivation. The large wheat fields earned it numerous nicknames such as "Land of Bread" or "Breadbasket of Portugal." The large cork oak forests in the Alentejo were also popular. More than half of the world's cork production comes from Portugal, and the Alentejo accounts for a significant portion of that.

The 1990s: high-quality wine from Alentejo

In the 1980s, viticulture finally got back on track: wine from the Alentejo became fashionable. This was likely also a result of Portugal's accession to the EU in 1986, which finally allowed for the much-needed investments in the wineries. The winemakers can now take advantage of modern technologies, such as for temperature regulation.

Until the 1990s, cooperatives were responsible for wine production in the Alentejo. For the most part, these were unpretentious and simply structured wines for household use. It wasn't until relatively late that the great potential of the Alentejo for premium winemaking was fully recognized. But success came quickly: more and more experienced winemakers settled in the region and put their visions into practice.

What wine can you expect from Alentejo

Excellent terroir and warm climate

Due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the Alentejo benefits from a warm and dry climate. Plenty of sunshine and little rain positively affect the ripeness of the grapes. There is no frost here - but summer temperatures can reach up to forty degrees.

The vines for Alentejo wine thrive on rocky soils of granite and slate at an average altitude of about 200 meters. The mixture with clay and limestone leads to excellent nutrient and moisture supply. The granite content serves as a thermal reservoir. In the peripheral areas, the soils are slightly deeper than in the center.

DOC areas and regional wines

In 1989, the DOC Alentejo was divided into eight subregions, most of which are located in the center of the region. This was done to better regulate viticulture and allow the different microclimates to shine.

Other wines are often called "Vinho Regional Alentejano" because their grapes do not come entirely from the DOC areas. Moreover, the region's Vinho regulations give winemakers more leeway: more international grape varieties are allowed.

The unique wine style of the region

Due to the high temperatures, which can rise to 40 degrees in summer, the Alentejo presents us with some challenges. Artificial irrigation is essential here, and modern cellar technology is of utmost importance. The grapes reach their peak ripeness relatively early. Therefore, the grape harvest usually takes place as early as mid-August.

An important winery that represents the unique characteristics of the region is Monte da Ravasqueira in the municipality of Arraiolos. This family-owned business has been producing high-quality wines for several generations. Particular attention has been paid to the technical equipment of the wineries, in which significant investments have been made. A wide selection of wines from the Monte da Ravasqueira estate can be found at VINELLO, among others.
