The winery Catena Zapata has made it its vision to vinify unforgettable, characterful and rich wines that reflect and remain true to Mendoza, because with the history of Catena Zapata the history of Argentine wine begins.

Winery Catena Zapata - More than 100 years ago

Catena Zapata was founded in 1902 and is known for its pioneering role in the revival of Malbec and in the discovery of extremely high-altitude terroirs in the Andean foothills of Mendoza. Nicolás’ grandfather, Nicola Catena, planted his first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza in the founding year. This was the starting signal for Argentine wines.

Today, the wines of the winery Catena Zapata are sourced from six historic vineyards of the estate:

• Angélica
• La Pirámide
• Nicasia
• Domingo
• Adrianna and
• Angélica Sur.

As the Grand Cru of South America, the family’s Adrianna estate at almost 5,000 feet in elevation is so described.

Nicolas Catena

Like grandfather, like grandson. Almost. Because the grandfather of the same name sold the wines only in bulk for many decades. When the young Nicolas Catena took over responsibility, that came to an end. After a trip to Napa Valley, Nicolas Catena knew he wanted to push the quality of Mendoza wines to the very top – and he succeeded. Every site that did not promise premium quality he sold. The focus was entirely on the high-altitude Andes vineyards.
