Emil Bauer & Söhne - A wine legacy
The winery Emil Bauer & Söhne is a family business, which today is run by Martin and Alexander Bauer in the third generation. The winery was founded by the brothers' grandfather, Emil Bauer, in the 1920s. Emil Bauer's sons steadily expanded the winery, and Alexander and Martin, for their part, have added a modern touch to the family business. While Alexander, as an oenologist, is largely responsible for the vineyards, which cover more than 30 hectares in the picturesque Palatinate village of Nußdorf, just below the wine route, Martin Bauer knows how to hold his own in the business as a marketing expert. The teamwork works: in addition to palatable, harmonious wines, the new label design and snotty, provocative slogans score all kinds of plus points. The winemaker duo shows that the Palatinate can also be different - and we are curious to see what else will follow.

Emil Bauer wine labels as a statement
The Bauer brothers of the winery Emil Bauer & Sons are real globetrotters who like to travel to different corners of the world. It is mainly positive experiences they have had with countries and people. Not least this also shapes their cosmopolitan attitude. To express this and bring their attitude to the people, they have come up with something very special: For the Emil Bauer wines, they create particularly original and meaningful bottle labels. At the same time, they themselves define who their target group will be, for example, those for their favorite grape variety, Sauvignon Blanc, which they naturally also grow themselves. Thus the label of the Emil Bauer Sauvignon Blanc says: "If you are a racist, a terrorist or just an asshole - don't drink my Sauvignon Blanc". But their other wines are also adorned by similarly original sayings and statements, making them a lot of fun to drink even before you've opened the bottle.
The grape varieties at the Emil Bauer winery
Almost 50% of the vineyardsof the winery Emil Bauer & Söhne are planted with red grape varieties. Since climate change is naturally making itself felt here as well, the brothers have decided to plant grapes that are rather unusual for Germany as well. The wide range of their red grape varieties includes:
- Malbec
- Petit Verdot
- Barbera
- Nebbiolo
The vineyards of Emil Bauer & Sons
The Bauer family's vineyards, which now cover about 35 hectares, are now farmed sustainably. One of the plots of Emil Bauer & Söhne is located in the well-known Kastanienbusch site, above Birkweiler. The soils here are red sandstone, which is known to hold little water, causing it to warm up more quickly. This, in turn, is good for the Riesling, which grows and ripens particularly splendidly here.
