More information about Tannat Viognier Reserva - Alto de la Ballena

In the glass, the Tannat Viognier Reserva of Alto de la Ballena shows a dense golden yellow color. At the edge also shows a color transition to garnet red. When swirling the glass, this red wine reveals a high density and fullness, which shows in church windows at the edge of the glass. Poured into a Bordeaux glass, this red wine from Uruguay presents wonderfully complex aromas of violet and red currant, rounded off by further fruity nuances contributed by aging in wooden barrels.

On the palate, Alto de la Ballena's Tannat Viognier Reserva starts wonderfully dry, grippy and aromatic. There is dry and really dry. This red wine belongs to the second group, as it was bottled with just 1.5 grams of residual sugar. On the tongue, this punchy red wine is characterized by an immensely melting texture. Due to its present fruit acidity, the Tannat Viognier Reserva presents itself impressively fresh and lively on the palate. In the finish, this mature wine from the wine-growing region of Maldonado finally inspires with exceptional length. Once again, hints of red currant and violets appear. In the aftertaste, mineral notes of the slate-dominated soils join in.

Vinification of the Alto de la Ballena Tannat Viognier Reserva

This powerful red wine from Uruguay is made from Tannat and Viognier grapes. The grapes grow close to the sea in Maldonado. The vines here dig their roots deep into soils of shale. Due to the moderating influence of the nearby sea, the grapes ripen more slowly and develop more aromatic depth. The grapes for this red wine from Uruguay are harvested exclusively by hand at the time of optimal ripeness. After the harvest, the grapes quickly reach the winery. Here they are sorted and carefully broken up. Then fermentation takes place in small wood at controlled temperatures. After the end of fermentation, the powerful Tannat Viognier Reserva is aged for another 9 months in American oak barriques.

Food recommendation for Alto de la Ballena Tannat Viognier Reserva

Enjoy this red wine from Uruguay best tempered at 15 - 18°C as an accompanying wine to spaghetti with caper-tomato sauce, cod with cucumber-mustard vegetables or leek soup.
