Weingut Abril - History on the Kaiserstuhl
Weingut Abril is located on the well-known Kaiserstuhl mountain range and thus also in the middle of the wine-growing region of the same name. The region is steeped in history, as archaeological relics have been found here that date back as far as 7,500 years. The new construction of the winery, which was built in 2011, had to be relocated because remains of a settlement were found at the originally planned site. Viticulture here began, as so often in the southwest of Germany, with the Romans, who brought the plant to the region in the 2nd century BC. Weingut Abril was founded 280 years ago and is therefore one of the oldest in the region. It feels a deep connection to the history and tradition of the area. In order to preserve this for future generations and to carry the history far into the future, they rely on environmentally friendly, organic viticulture that produces high-quality wines. Since 2015, the winery has been managed by Eva-Maria Köpfer.

The Kaiserstuhl - where lava once flowed
The terroir of the Kaiserstuhl is characterized by volcanic rock. Originally, the mountains were dotted with volcanoes, which, however, became extinct as early as 19 million years ago. The last ice age brought with it a large amount of loess, which settled on the mountain slopes and created the terroir that today forms the basis for the wines of the region. Various grape varieties for the wines of Weingut Abril thrive on this terroir, for example:
- Müller-Thurgau (Ruländer)
- Grauburgunder
- Weißburgunder
- Merlot
- Gewürztraminer
- and many others
The vineyards are cultivated according to the regulations of the ECOVIN association, the largest German association for organic viticulture. This includes increasing soil fertility through suitable cultivation methods, training resilient plants without the use of herbicides, synthetic insecticides and fertilizers, greening the vineyards to promote greater biodiversity, creating a closed production cycle and other environmentally friendly principles.

The wine ranges of Weingut Abril
The estate’s wines can be divided into four groups, which Weingut Abril has named according to their characteristics:
Frucht
These wines are matured in stainless steel tanks. The wines have a white label and, due to this style of maturation, display a particularly acid-driven, fruity character.
Stein
The vineyards from which the grapes for these wines come impart a mineral note to the wine, which is emphasized by the anthracite-colored label. The wines are matured in oak barrels made from wood sourced in South Baden.
Zeit
The estate’s top wines, which are defined primarily by their maturation time. Here connoisseurs will find reserve wines from barrique barrels, for which grapes from the best parcels are selected.
Perlen & Co
Under this label you will find the estate’s sparkling wines, as well as specialties such as olive oil, balsamic vinegar, fortified wine or spirits from the Abril estate.
