More information about Chocolate Notes – The Red Wine Selection - 3x Tasting Pack

Three countries, three terroirs, one unifying play of aromas: seductive notes of dark chocolate. This carefully composed tasting package unites characterful red wines from South Africa, Germany and Italy, delighting with depth, spice and a velvety structure. Each wine interprets the theme “Chocolate Notes” in its own way – sometimes powerful and opulent, sometimes elegant and finely interwoven, sometimes warm and Mediterranean.

The shared aromatics: Why red wine smells like chocolate

Chocolatey notes in red wine arise from several factors: very ripe grapes at harvest, intensive maceration to optimally extract color and tannins, and targeted maturation in toasted oak barrels. During aging, complex aromas develop from fruit, wood and tannin that are reminiscent of dark chocolate, cocoa, mocha or dark pralines.

All three wines share dark berry and black cherry aromas, a ripe, soft tannin structure, maturation in wooden casks, and a dense, long finish with cocoa and roasted notes. This creates a harmonious taste experience between abundant fruit and chocolatey depth.

The Chocolate Block – Boekenhoutskloof (South Africa)

This renowned cuvée from Swartland stands for power, spice and complexity. The grapes come from carefully selected parcels with poor, mineral-rich soils that promote low yields and high aromatic concentration.

Vinification

The individual grape varieties are harvested and fermented separately. Fermentation takes place with temperature control and extended maceration to extract maximum color and tannin structure. The wine then ages in French oak barrels with different toast levels. The targeted use of oak supports the natural fruit and brings out notes of dark chocolate, espresso and fine vanilla.

Character

In the glass this is a powerful, dense red wine with aromas of blackberry, black cherry and plum. The roasted notes are reminiscent of dark chocolate and cocoa. On the palate it is full-bodied, structured and long-lasting with a velvety finish.

Dark Chocolate Réserve – Weingut Bietighöfer (Germany)

This German red wine impressively proves that more northerly wine regions can also produce intense, chocolatey red wines. The estate works with selected, fully ripe grapes from top sites that achieve optimal ripeness and concentration.

Vinification

After careful hand-picking, a classic maceration fermentation is carried out with extended contact between juice and skins. Gentle punching down of the cap extracts color and aromatic compounds without overloading the structure. The wine is matured in barriques and partly in new oak barrels. The toasting of the wood gives the wine its characteristic notes of dark cocoa, mocha and fine spice.

Character

Dark cherry, blackcurrant and subtle herbal notes combine with hints of bittersweet chocolate. On the palate the wine appears elegant, with fine-grained tannins and a harmonious balance between fruit and roasted aromatics. The chocolatey note here is particularly delicate and well integrated.

The Chocolate Tube Primitivo – Mare Magnum (Italy)

This powerful Primitivo comes from the sun-drenched south of Italy and embodies Mediterranean warmth and intense fruit richness. The old vines deliver concentrated grapes with high extract content.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested at optimal physiological ripeness. Temperature-controlled fermentation ensures fruit intensity and color depth. Part of the wine matures in oak barrels, another part in stainless-steel tanks before the final cuvée is assembled. The maturation in wood brings forth warm roasted aromas reminiscent of dark chocolate and fine cocoa beans.

Character

Opulent aromas of ripe plums, Amarena cherry and blackberry meet vanilla, spices and a clearly perceptible chocolate note. On the palate it is soft, full-bodied and rounded, with a long, slightly sweet-tinged finish that recalls dark chocolate.

A package for lovers of dark aromas

“Chocolate Notes – The Red Wine Selection” is a sensory journey through three wine countries and three styles – united by their intense, chocolatey aromatics. Ideal for cozy evenings, as a companion to dark chocolate, or as a special gift for lovers of powerful red wines.

Three bottles, three signatures – one shared moment of enjoyment full of cocoa, depth and velvety elegance.
