Exquisite and Exclusive: Mallorca's Wine

The Balearic island of Mallorca has two popular wine regions. The very small D.O.P. Binissalem is located in the middle of the island and is the epitome of wine from Mallorca. Plà i Llevant, the much larger D.O.P., is situated on the eastern side. In the north and along the western coast lies the wine region Serra de Tramuntana – Costa Nord. The excellent climatic conditions and good soil lead to high-quality wine in all wine regions. The winemakers of Mallorca focus on quality. Each year, they vinify around 48,000 hl of delicious, first-class, and exquisite wine in their bodegas (wineries). The demand for wine from Mallorca is increasing, and exports have recently risen.

Binissalem is the Heart Region for Wine from the Island of Mallorca

Binissalem is a small municipality in the heart of the Mediterranean island. When the words Mallorca and wine are mentioned in the same sentence, the next one will certainly begin with the name of this small, traditional wine-growing region. Binissalem is the heart of wine from Mallorca. The area is a D.O. The designation stands for “Denominación de Origen.” It marks products of Spanish origin. As a D.O.P. (Denominación de Origen Protegida), wines from Binissalem are protected in their origin. The high, fulfilled quality controls of the grape varieties are evidenced. Since 1988, these wines from Mallorca have carried the prestigious designation. By the way, this wine-growing area from the small region is the first Spanish island region allowed to carry the designation. Bottles of wine are labeled with D.O. when at least 50% of the Manto Negro grape variety is contained.

Mallorca Red Wine from Binissalem

Binissalem is a beautiful, unspoiled, and green region in Mallorca. The red grape varieties are protected from the stormy sea winds by the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains. The grape varieties Manto Negro, Callet, or some Tempranillo thrive here in elevated vineyards. With characteristic fruity notes of blackberry or cherry and a balanced spiciness, the red wine exudes a fragrant, slightly smoky bouquet. Limestone provides the vine with a substrate to develop a more intense color. The rock also favors the acidity and alcohol content. A red wine from this part of Mallorca is definitely robust. The optimal drinking temperature of a red from Binissalem is between 15 and 18ºC.

Autochthonous Red Grape Varieties from Mallorca

Mallorca has both white and red autochthonous grape varieties. Those that later yield a delightful red wine are more numerous. They are called:

  • Callet
  • Gorgollassa
  • Manto Negro
  • Fogoneu

Other Grape Varieties for Red Wine from Mallorca

On the Mediterranean island, there are additional red grape varieties. For the wine from Mallorca, winemakers cultivate, for example:

  • Merlot
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Shiraz
  • Tempranillo
  • Pinot Noir

The Large Wine Region on Mallorca Plà i Llevant

Plà i Llevant is not quite as famous as the wine-growing region Binissalem. However, it is significantly larger in area. Partly, Plà i Llevant is located on the eastern coast of the Balearic island, where the water is light blue. The coast features sandy and stony beaches. From here, the wine-growing area stretches deep into the island of Mallorca. In the expansive vineyards, both white and red vines are planted. The Mallorca white wine is primarily made from Prensal Blanc. This white grape is autochthonous to Mallorca. For fresh and spicy white wines, Prensal Blanc is often an integral component.

In the wine-growing region Plà i Llevant, red wine is made from various grape varieties. However, the native grape variety Fogoneu is most commonly used. The area around Felanitx produces many of the plump purple grapes. Fogoneu is subtly fruity and acidic. Therefore, the red grape variety is presented as a cuvée in combination with Callet and Manto Negro. Like Binissalem, Plà i Llevant is a protected designation of origin and provides all connoisseurs with delicious quality wine.

Wine Region Mallorca

Mallorca is a Spanish island in the Mediterranean. Approximately 900,000 inhabitants live on it. The capital is called Palma. The small municipality of Binissalem in the heart of the island is the flagship of Mallorcan wine. Additionally, the wine from Binissalem is marked and protected as D.O. Red wine from Mallorca is popular, well-known, and is significantly cultivated there. Throughout the year, the sun shines for several hours a day on Mallorca. Rainfall is low and barely noticeable in the summer months.
