Aragon: Home of Garnacha Tinta

Aragon is primarily known for its red wines, with Garnacha Tinta being by far the most significant variety. A typical feature is the blend of indigenous and international varieties, but of course, here at VINELLO you will also find varietal red and white wines from Aragon.

Important Grape Varieties in Aragon

The defining red grape variety for Aragon is the indigenous Garnacha or Grenache. Additionally, the Spanish variety Tempranillo from the neighboring La Rioja, as well as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Carignan are cultivated. The most important white varieties in the wine region are Garnacha Blanca, Chardonnay, and the Spanish Macabeo. Furthermore, there are vineyard areas with Gewürztraminer and Moscatel (Muscat).

The Four DO Regions in Aragon

In Aragon, wine is produced in a total of eleven wine-growing areas. Four of these areas have the controlled designation of origin DO (Denominación de Origen) or the protected designation of origin DOP (Denominación de Origen Protegida). These areas are:

  • Calatayud

  • Campo de Borja

  • Cariñena

  • Somontano.

Calatayud

Calatayud in the southwest of Aragon is one of the hottest and driest areas of the wine region. The 6,000 hectares of vineyard area predominantly span the marl, limestone, and slate soils on both sides of the Ebro and its tributaries like the Jalon and the Manubles. The cultivation occurs at altitudes between 500 and 900 meters. A significant temperature gradient during the day slows down the ripening process of the wine, which has a positive impact on quality.

The region produces characterful and full-bodied red wines, fruity fresh white wines, and powerful rosés. A dry red cuvée typical for Aragon from Calatayud can be enjoyed, for example, with the expressive Monte Armantes Garnacha Tempranillo from Bodegas San Gregorio.

Campo de Borja

Campo de Borja is named after the famous noble family, the Borjas, who brought winemaking in this part of Aragon to its peak. The area forms the transition zone between the Ebro Valley and the Iberian Mountains further west. In the hilly locations between 350 and 700 meters in height, wine is cultivated on an area of 7,400 hectares. Here, clay and limestone soils predominate. The proportion of Garnacha among the red varieties is higher at 75% than in the rest of Aragon. The proportion of white varieties is only 10%.

High-quality red wines from Campo de Borja can be ordered, for example, with the varietal Garnacha wines from Cuevas de Arom. This includes the complex Os Cantals DO or the also deeply complex As Ladieras DO. A very intense and fruity Garnacha that thrives on vines up to a hundred years old is the Veraton Garnacha Campo de Borja from the Alto Moncayo winery. If you wish to buy a vegan red wine, the Crucillón DO from Bodegas Aragonesas is exactly what you are looking for.

Cariñena

Cariñena is one of the oldest Spanish wine-growing regions and was the first to receive the newly established DO status in 1960. With around 17,000 hectares, Cariñena has more vineyard area than any other region in Aragon. The wineries are predominantly located in the Ebro Valley. In the south, the land rises, allowing cultivation at altitudes up to 800 meters. The barren soil in Cariñena is complemented by alluvial deposits from the Ebro.

The red wines from Care Family Vineyards are very popular here at VINELLO and are also well suited for newcomers to the world of wine. These include the red Tinto Sobre Lias based on Garnacha and Syrah, the varietal red Garnacha Nativa, and the Crianza - a cuvée of Merlot and Tempranillo. You can enjoy a delicious semi-dry summer wine from Cariñena with the fruity Agostón Chardonnay Viura DO from the Virgen del Aguila winery.

Somontano

Somontano, with around 4,300 hectares of vineyard area, is the smallest and also the northernmost of the four DO regions in Aragon. The name literally means "at the foot of the mountain" and alludes to its location at the southern foothills of the Pyrenees. The soil is heavily calcareous, well-drained, and favors deep root growth of the vines. The temperatures are on average lower than in the rest of Aragon.

Among the ambitious and successful wineries in Somontano is the Bodega Enate, which produces true premium wines. For special occasions, the José Manuel Broto Reserva Especial DO made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot or the Rafael Canogar Reserva Especial DO are recommended. As a full-bodied white wine with intense aroma, the Chardonnay Barrique DO from Enate is also recommended.

Location of Aragon in Spain

The wine region of Aragon is located in northeastern Spain. To the north, it borders France. To the east, it is separated from the Mediterranean by Catalonia and the Valencian Community. To the southwest, Castile-La Mancha borders it, and to the west, Castile and León. To the northwest are La Rioja and Navarra. The two dominant geographical features in Aragon are the Pyrenees in the north and the valleys of the Ebro River and its tributaries.

Wine Region Aragon

Aragon is a Spanish wine region that enjoys an internationally high reputation for its four DO regions: Calatayud, Campo de Borja, Cariñena, and Somontano. Here, approximately one million hectoliters of red wines, high-quality rosés, and cheerful whites are produced from around 34,000 hectares of vineyard area for unclouded summer enjoyment. In addition to the wine cooperatives or cooperativas and the large estates or bodegas, there are now also a number of smaller independent wineries in Aragon.
