Catalonia (302)

Who else is responsible for wine in Catalonia? The Greeks. If the archaeologists are to be believed, they pressed Spain's first wine - in today's D.O. Empordà. What is certain is that Roman emperors already enjoyed wine from Catalonia.

Catalonia: Light or full-bodied, spicy or lively - but always more than just Cava

Josep Raventós started in 1872 with Cava, then Miguel Torres imported his know-how to Catalonia - and planted French and German grape varieties. How does Catalonia's wine present itself today? Lively, dynamic, fruity - vitality from one of the most diverse wine regions in Europe - with fresh, light white wines and a dazzling spectrum of reds and rosés. Admittedly, France stands as no other country for sparkling wines, but Catalonia's Cava is right on its heels.

What does Catalonia wine stand for?

For quality, authenticity, and fascinating diversity with a long tradition. Countless grape varieties flow into local and characterful wine styles. Each wine region in Catalonia is unique, blessed by Mediterranean climate, the Mistral wind, and exquisite soils - in the cultivated landscape of Spain.

Viticulture in Catalonia: Exquisite conditions for top wines

No, it doesn't always have to be Freixenet: Numerous small producers of sparkling Cava are worth discovering - and over 90 percent of Cavas come from Catalonia. Every year, the region produces over three million hectoliters of wine on about 70,000 hectares. Under the protected designation of origin Denominación de Origen, ten wine regions with very unique product character come together, shaped by microclimate, soil, and specific location. A variety of grape types, each thriving under its preferred conditions. A special branch is dedicated to organic viticulture, with sustainable practices and a reduction in chemicals providing enough reasons for a journey of discovery under the label of DOP (Denominación de Origen Protegida) Catalunya - each wine region a genuine insider tip.

Catalonia wine: The North

Our journey begins in the North, on the border with France. We are in DO Empordà, the hinterland of the coastal strip and Spain's oldest wine region. Properly combined: Even the Greeks were seduced by the Mediterranean climate to cultivate grapes here. Northerly winds from the Pyrenees bring cooling. The soils are calcareous, deeply interspersed with granite. Do you love it sweet? Empordà does too - and serves you its Garnatxas that evoke memories of Banyuls from French Roussillon. Further inland, strong temperature fluctuations and low precipitation dominate the weather. We are in DO Costers del Segre: Calcareous soils with fine granite influence create aromatic white wines, dense reds, and fruity rosés. West of the capital Barcelona, the Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery perches amid steep rocks. Nomen est Omen in the 600-hectare tiny DO Pla de Bages: Since the Middle Ages, monasteries here have nurtured viticulture on clay and sandy soils.

Catalonia wine: On the way south

Conca de Barbera aims for excellence with interesting white, rosé, and red wines from regional and international grape varieties on 5,800 hectares. Wine lovers from all over the world visit this region as do Art Nouveau fans, as six wineries present this style. Geographically, this growing area is also attractive, located in a crater basin - with vineyards at 350 to 600 meters. Rather thirsty for a lively white? Head south to the coast: Here, the tranquil Montsant tempts you, which can also deliver reds that are spicy, robust, rich in tannins and alcohol. Right next to it, Terra Alta has ambitions for global recognition: Catalonia's second-largest producer benefits from a mix of Mediterranean and continental climates. The wet Garbi and dry Mistral winds sweep across the clay and gravel plateau. Perfect conditions for grape varieties like Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca, Tinta, and Carinena, as well as new varieties like lush red Caladoc, Marselane, and Petit Verdot.

Catalonia wine for the Pope

Hot sun, lime, 7,000 hectares: This is Tarragona, the third-largest D.O. and wine region since antiquity. The grape varieties Garnacha, Carinena, and Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo) dominate. The result: Aromatic red wines with power and structure, also available kosher. And light, fruity white wines. But did you know that Tarragona's delicious liqueur drops are also popular worldwide as altar wines, supplying even the Pope? Exclusivity is also represented by DOCa Priorat. Wine connoisseurs know what that means: Denominación de Origen Calificada is held by only two regions - Priorat and Rioja! Precious Garnacha and Mazuelo vines grow on slate soils on the steepest wine slopes in Europe. For excellent reds with at least five years of bottle aging - because a good reputation obliges.

Big, bigger, Penedès: Home of Cava

DO Penedès: Ascending from the coast, we drive through Bajo and lower-lying Medio up to 850 meters in Alta-Penedès. The largest wine growing region in Catalonia, with over 26,000 hectares, is a center of sparkling wine and home to Cava. Cava matures in bottle fermentation from the grape varieties Xarel-lo (for body and character), fruity-fresh Macabeo, and elegant Parellada or rot-resistant Chardonnay. Cava tastes soft, fresh, slightly fruity-yeasty, without intrusive acidity. The famous Miguel Torres winery is also located in Penedès. If proof were needed that quantity and quality go hand in hand - Torres provides it all! And delivers affordable entry-level wines as well as rare, award-winning top drops.

Torres & more! Catalonia wine - enjoyment for pioneers and connoisseurs

In 1870, Jaime Torres returned as a wealthy man from Cuba to launch the first winery in Vilafranca del Penedès. Since 1940, Torres has been promoting his wines in the USA. Coronas, Viña Sol, and Sangre del Toro are true classics. Since the 1960s, state-of-the-art cellar technology, stainless steel tanks, and temperature-controlled fermentation have been standard. Since then, grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer have been making waves in the Spanish and global wine world. Thus, countless awards line the path of Miguel Torres. VINELLO gladly recommends its Reserva Real Penedès, made from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot for you to try. Mmmh ... bright ruby red, fragrance of ripe berries, dark chocolate, silky tannin structure. And then: A long, soft finish with a spicy aftertaste. Or a Milmanda Chardonnay, shining golden yellow, for a romantic seduction dinner. The aromatic dense bouquet of the pure Milmanda from Torres exudes notes of apple and almonds with great length ... - Oh, just experience wines from Catalonia for yourself!
