Saar (15)

Hardly has the Saar left the Saarland, it meanders through one of the most important wine regions of Germany: Saar. As part of the Mosel growing area, Saar wines represent freshness, minerality, and vibrant colors.

Saar Wine

Following the Saar, from the idyllic town of Serrig to the confluence with the Moselle at Konz, one discovers impressive steep sites on the southern slopes and small picturesque villages with their associated wineries. The density of VDP wineries is surprisingly high. It is surprising not because of the quality, but because only about 790 hectares of vines are cultivated here. Other wine regions cannot boast such a density of VDP quality wines. What makes the wine from the Saar special? As so often, it lies in the climate, soil, and a handful of winemakers who have passionately dedicated themselves to the craft.

The Wine of the Saar - Terroir & Character

A wonderful terroir exists in the Saar - especially for Riesling. The soil of the lower Saar valley is characterized by Devon slate and is partially dotted with diabase volcanic rock. The cool climate allows the vines to undergo a slow ripening process, resulting in a naturally high fruit sweetness. In contrast, the proportion of fruit sugar is low, resulting in a maximum of about 12% alcohol by volume.

The Saar wine expresses itself as fine, fresh, and mineral. A complex basket full of light native and exotic fruits presents itself on the palate and is accompanied by garden herbs and flowers. In the glass, the wine shines in a yellow robe with greenish reflections. Saar wines are rich in extract substances and vibrant in the finish. Even after years of aging, Riesling from the Saar bursts with freshness.

Maturity Thanks to Renaturation

The abundant maturity of Saar wines is no surprise today but was not a given a few decades ago. Climatic changes set the course for local viticulture. This is not solely due to climate change but also relates to the restructuring of the river for shipping and widespread renaturation. Most sites are not directly on the Saar but in side valleys, where the old Saar flows. Due to the restructuring, the old Saar flows more slowly through today’s nature reserve and can therefore store more warmth, which it transfers to the steep vineyards.

The Most Expensive Wine in Germany

The most expensive wine from Germany comes from the Scharzhofberg vineyard near Wiltlingen, in the heart of the Saar wine region. The 2003 Scharzhofberger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese by Egon Müller went for a staggering €12,000 at auction. Undoubtedly, this has made Scharzhofberg one of the most famous German wine sites both nationally and internationally.

Which Grape Varieties Grow on the Saar?

On the southern slopes of the side valleys, Riesling, Grauer Burgunder, and Müller-Thurgau predominantly thrive. Smaller plots on the approximately 791 hectares are also cultivated with the varieties Dornfelder, Blauer Spätburgunder, Kerner, Rivaner, Auxerrois, and Weißer Burgunder.
