More information about The Ironstone Pressings GSM - d'Arenberg

The Ironstone Pressings GSM from d'Arenberg is a generous, full-bodied and opulent red wine cuvée from the Australian wine-growing region of McLaren Vale in Adelaide. This red wine is vinified from Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre grape varieties.

This wine pleases the eye with a strong ruby red color with purple reflections. A fragrance of dark fruit aromas escapes the glass. Plums, mulberries, mineral notes, underpinned by a hint of exotic Indian spices unfold. Iron, stony characteristics provide the final touch.

On the open, generous palate, fresh fruit marries with particularly complex nuances of quince paste, cinnamon, nutmeg, star anise and beet. Hints of graphite and wet stone round out the palate. Thanks to lively acidity and an abundance of fine, gravelly tannins, this Australian red has nice aging potential.

Vinification of the Ironstone Pressing d'Arenberg GSM

Once the grapes arrive at the d'Arenberg winery, they are gently crushed in small batches and sent to open fermenters. Two-thirds of this wine is tamped down with the feet during fermentation. Then this wine is pressed into a basket and placed in new and used French oak barrels to complete the fermentation process. After that, this wine remains in the barriques for some time.

The grape varieties for this cuvée are not blended until bottling. Without fining and filtration, this red wine is bottled.

Food recommendation d'Arenberg The Ironstone Pressings

Serve this dry red wine from Australia with grilled lamb chops, rump steak, pork tenderloin, goulash, leg of lamb, veal shank or oxtail.

The name The Ironstone Pressing

Many of the celebrated, historic vineyards in McLaren Vale are interspersed with ancient, weathered granite laterite, also known as ironstone. The iron oxides contained in the stone give it its unusual rusty reddish-brown color. For the construction of many of the winery's buildings, the largest pieces of rock were used in the late 19th century, giving this cuvée the title Ironstone Pressing.
