South Australia Wine - from Barossa to the Outback

The wine regions in South Australia are leading the rise of Down Under wine and have worked their way to the top of the world with finesse and distinctive Shiraz wines. Fruit-intensive, concentrated, powerful red wine as well as delicate, juicy white wine from Adelaide and its surroundings make up about 50% of the wines from Australia. Welcome to the Australian Wine State.

South Australia - Wine from the South of Australia

Winegrowing in South Australia has a certain tradition. Just three years after the colonization of the area, German settlers recognized the potential. The first wineries sprang up, and viticulture in Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and the Adelaide Hills flourished. Many wineries continue to create world-class wine to this day - the original intention of the cultivation - using ancient vine stocks. Because what did not happen here is what makes South Australian wines special. Phylloxera, the vine louse, never managed to infiltrate the vineyards around Adelaide thanks to strict measures. Thus, the wine region boasts some of the oldest vine areas in the world.

Shiraz is considered by winemakers to be a native variety. After all, the grape variety has thrived for nearly 200 years from the coastal city of Adelaide to the barren plains and hills of the Southern Flinders Ranges. Arrived on ships, it stayed to establish South Australian wine. German immigrants brought with them not only sausage and beer but also Riesling. The French brought Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. What tastes good was brought along. This has hardly changed to this day, although the wines from South Australia can hardly be compared to their European counterparts due to the special climate.

The Australian wines are characterized by strong fruit, are not very smooth, but instead are opulent and direct. High alcohol, soft tannins, rooted - the wines from the six wine regions of South Australia pack a punch and hold their own.

Hot Climate and Red Soils

The wine region of South Australia stretches from the Limestone Coast in the south to Far North. The landscape is characterized by green plains, bushy hills, and surreal precursors of the Outback, where only minimal cultivation is possible. The climate is hot and very dry in summer, while winter is somewhat cooler and wetter. Note that the grape harvest in South Australia takes place from February to April, during the early Australian autumn. Due to high temperatures, grapes can ripen perfectly, sometimes losing acidity. South Australia is very hot and experiences many hours of sunshine, allowing the grapes to develop a lot of sugar. Therefore, most Australian wines are also quite alcoholic. Ocean winds and the hills of the Mount Lofty Ranges offer some cooling. The "cool climate" on the highlands allows for the production of fruit-driven and balanced white wines.

Grape Varieties in South Australia

The number one grape variety is undoubtedly the "native" Shiraz grape, which is vinified in all forms. In addition, vineyards with the following varieties can be found:

Red Grape Varieties

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Garnacha (Grenache)
  • Merlot
  • Mourvèdre
  • Sangiovese
  • Monastrell

White Grape Varieties

  • Chardonnay
  • Riesling
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Sémillon
  • Viognier
  • Rousanne
  • Marsanne
  • Colombard

GSM

Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre - a cuvée of these grape varieties is the essence of perfect interplay. Harmony is the strength of the GSM composition. First emerging in the southern Rhône Valley, GSM wines are a flagship for wines from Barossa Valley and Fleurieu.

Wine Regions in South Australia

The winegrowing in South Australia mainly takes place in the 6 wine regions. There is a minor cultivation of wine on the so-called Peninsulas, but the share is negligible in the overall picture.

Limestone Coast Zone - Coonawarra, Padthaway, and Wrattonbully

On the dark red "Terra rossa" soils of the Limestone Coast, the best Cabernet Sauvignon vines thrive, producing deep dark wines with beautifully concentrated aromas of plum and blackcurrant. Especially in Coonawarra, the Cabernet Sauvignon wines develop an incomparable cassis and eucalyptus note on the fertile red limestone clay. Additionally, Shiraz also performs well on this unique soil. In the higher regions of Padthaway and Wrattonbully, besides Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, crisp Chardonnay and Riesling are also cultivated.

Terra rossa - the Coonawarra Terroir

On a small area of 2 x 20 kilometers lies the incredibly fertile terra rossa soil, which grants the vines a distinctive, pronounced character. The red limestone clay layer, pure water in the substrate, and maritime winds combine to form a terroir that allows the grapes to ripen slowly. The terra rossa Cabernet Sauvignon wines from Coonawarra are considered some of the best wines from South Australia.

Lower Murray Zone - the Riverland

The Riverland, named after the Murray River, is the largest cultivation area in South Australia, if not in all of Australia. The subtropical climate combined with moderate rainfall creates ideal conditions for agriculture. As a result, almost every grape variety is grown here. The harvest almost exclusively goes into "Multi-District Blends" - wines made with grapes from various growing areas.

Fleurieu Zone - McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek

The Fleurieu Peninsula in the south of Adelaide unites the growing areas of McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. McLaren Vale produces magnificent red wines with their own identity. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot are grown here on a large scale and thanks to local winemakers, such as d'Arenberg, also vinified directly on-site, which is not a given. For wineries outside of McLaren Vale also like to make use of the ancient vine stocks. Further south, the Bremer River and Angas River wind through the Langhorne Creek wine region. On gravel and floodplain, all grape varieties commonly found in South Australia are grown, still primarily for sales to larger companies for "Multi-District Blends". There are only a few independent wineries in Langhorne Creek.

Off the Fleurieu Peninsula lies Kangaroo Island, where Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot thrive on about 80 hectares of land.

Mount Lofty Ranges - Adelaide Hills and Clare Valley

In the airy heights of Mount Lofty and its hills lies the Adelaide Hills growing area at 400 meters. Here, cooler versions of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grape varieties are produced - a distinct style as opposed to the opulent red wines. The acidity is dignified and smooth, the character fresh and spicy. Besides still wines, the grapes are also excellent for sparkling wines.

The Clare Valley, on the other hand, nestles in the lush greenery north of the Mount Lofty Ranges. It is one of the oldest winegrowing areas and is spared from excessively high temperatures and lack of rainfall. Thus, the grapes ripen well and retain their acidity. Ideal for crisp, fresh grape varieties like Riesling and Chardonnay. Of course, Shiraz and Cabernet cannot be missing, as is customary for a winegrowing region in South Australia.

Barossa - Eden Valley and Barossa Valley

Northeast of Adelaide lies perhaps the most famous and prestigious wine region of all: the Barossa Zone with the two areas of Eden Valley and Barossa Valley. Shiraz wine from the Barossa Zone has long defined the style of Australia: powerful, chocolaty, and full of spice. Over 100-year-old vine stocks produce extract-rich and hearty Shiraz wines year after year - some of the best in the world. Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Semillon are also grown on over 10,000 hectares and directly vinified in the Barossa Valley. The valley is home to many famous wineries, such as Torbreck and Penfold's, thus reinforcing its unique status in the Australian wine world.

Eden Valley, locally also called cool climate Barossa, is, on the other hand, a leader in Riesling wines from South Australia. The white wine presents itself as mineral, floral, and fresh. Nevertheless, excellent Shiraz wines are also produced in Eden Valley, led by the Henschke winery.

Far North Zone - South Flinders Range

The southern sections of the Flinders Range in northern South Australia represent the last bastion for viticulture and the beginning of the Outback. Temperatures are high during the day and pleasantly cool at night. Deep and fertile limestone forms the basis for the robust and powerful Shiraz red wines, which have a very good aging potential. Viticulture in the Far North Zone takes place at altitudes between 2 and 700 meters, with most vineyards located between 350 and 550 meters. The emphasis is clearly on red grape varieties such as Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, bringing the intense Australian sun into the cuvées.

Screw Cap - Character Heads from Australia

Whether simple wine or exclusive cult wine - they often have something in common in South Australia: the screw cap. Only a few wines are sealed here with a cork, mostly to profile themselves and meet old needs. To this day, opinions differ on what is better or more practical. The Aussies seem to care little; the wine is of high quality, and not everyone carries a corkscrew in their tucker bag.

Sustainability and Durability

Wine is a natural product. And Australia has enough primitive nature to preserve. This is known to the winemakers and grape growers from South Australia. In recent years, environmentally friendly systems and protocols for environmental protection have been established in this regard. In 2003, the South Australia Wine Industry Association, or SAWIA for short, adopted guidelines for wineries and regions to ensure lasting success with the sustainability of the wine industry. Sustaining Success was the name of the initiative, which led to a 14% reduction in soil irrigation compared to the national average in South Australia.

In 2008, the Entwine Australia program was launched, providing wine producers with the opportunity to be certified according to international sustainability and organic standards. About two-thirds of certified businesses are located in South Australia.

Furthermore, the individual wine regions introduced their own environmental programs. McLaren Vale is considered a leader in this regard. After just 2 years, various programs were able to make up to 40% of the vineyards comprehensively sustainable.

Additionally, nature itself offers various advantages. The diverse climate prevents numerous diseases and gives pests little chance. Chemical means are therefore only necessary in a few cases. Solar plants utilize the power of the sun. For example, the d’Arenberg winery operates a photovoltaic system for their winery in McLaren Vale. In relation to climate change, SAWIA is also working towards a smooth adaptation of climate-compatible measures, which have already been signed by the wine industry and the South Australian government.

Sustainable viticulture is the only way into the future that the wine industry is following. This results not only in nature-friendly viticulture but also in excellent quality.
