Wines from Western Loire – Discover Muscadet, Chenin Blanc & Cabernet Franc

Wines from the Loire are known worldwide for their freshness, elegance, and terroir diversity. The western Loire – from the Atlantic coast through Anjou to Touraine – offers a unique spectrum of white Loire wines, characterful red wines, and fine sparkling wines.

From the oceanic west to the volcanic central France, the wines of the Loire reflect the diversity of their origins. In a world of standardization, they stand for authenticity, balance, and expression.

The Loire – Europe's last wild river landscape – symbolizes freedom and harmony. Its winemakers combine tradition with innovation to bring nature and wine into harmony.

Wine Route

Nantes – The Home of Muscadet

Around the city Nantes lie the vineyards of the Nantais region, which have been producing wine for over 2000 years. The maritime climate and granite, gneiss, and shale soils create ideal conditions for the grape variety Melon Blanc, from which the Muscadet comes – one of the freshest, dry white wines of France.

Important appellations in the vineyards of Nantais:

  • AOP Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine – main appellation, known for “sur lie” aging
  • Overall 10 Crus Communaux such as Clisson, Le Pallet, or Gorges – Muscadets that are aged 18 to 24 months
  • AOP Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu – robust, round, fruity
  • AOP Gros Plant du Pays Nantais – hearty whites from Folle Blanche
  • AOP Coteaux d’Ancenis – aromatic whites from Malvoisie (Pinot Gris), but also red wines and rosés (from Gamay and Cabernet Franc)

Anjou-Saumur – The Terroir of Chenin Blanc

Further upstream, the region of Anjou-Saumur extends, a core area for Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, and Crémant de Loire. The soils range from slate to Tuff, producing both dry and sweet white wines and complex reds.

Important appellations in Anjou-Saumur:

  • AOP Savennières & Roche aux Moines – powerful, dry Chenin Blancs
  • AOP Coteaux du Layon & Bonnezeaux – noble sweet white wines with aging potential
  • AOP Anjou & Saumur – fruit-forward, mineral red wines from Cabernet Franc and dry white wines from Chenin Blanc
  • AOP Crémant de Loire – sparkling wine mainly from Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay
  • AOP Cabernet d’Anjou – semi-dry to sweet rosé wines from Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon
  • AOP Rosé d'Anjou – dry, fresh rosé wines mainly from Grolleau, Gamay, and Cabernet
  • AOP Rosé de Loire – fruity, semi-dry rosé wines from Grolleau and other varieties

Castle in Saumur

Touraine – Variety and Fruitiness

Touraine offers an exceptional diversity of Loire wines: robust Gamay reds, elegant Vouvray-white wines from Chenin Blanc, as well as fruity rosés and Crémants. The terroir is characterized by tuff, clay, and limestone.

Known appellations of Touraine:

  • AOP Vouvray – Chenin Blanc in dry, semi-dry, sweet or sparkling forms
  • Chinon & Bourgueil – characterful reds from Cabernet Franc
  • AOP Touraine (with Oisly, Chenonceaux) – fruity, accessible whites and rosés
  • AOP Jasnières & Coteaux du Loir – fresh, elegant whites

Typical Grape Varieties of Western Loire

  • Melon Blanc – Muscadet with citrus, salt, and finesse
  • Chenin Blanc – from dry to sweet, always with structure
  • Cabernet Franc – the backbone of red wines
  • Sauvignon Blanc – mainly in the AOP Touraine and IGP Val de Loire

Enjoyment and Food Pairings

Wines from the Loire are true food companions. Whether Muscadet with oysters, Chenin Blanc with goat cheese, or Chinon with lamb – the western Loire offers the perfect wine pairing for every occasion.
