Ahr Valley - Red wine from Germany. Naturally from the red wine paradise Ahr itself. From steep rocky slopes, warming stones, and the northernmost wine-growing region in Rhineland-Palatinate. The Ahr flows through the valley, flanked by forested northern slopes and the southern slopes, which are patchily cultivated with vines. Here, the demanding Pinot Noir thrives in its full glory, here is where Germany's best red wine is produced, here is where Ahr wine is at home.

Ahr Wines - A Specialty from Germany

The Ahr is a small wine region with a big name. The approximately 550 hectares of vineyard area are quite small compared to the Pfalz or Rheinhessen, but here, it’s not about size, rather about how one tends to the vines. The winemakers certainly put in a lot of effort, especially when climbing the steep and barren rock formations. Fortunately; otherwise, we would miss out on the finest red wines from Germany.

Wine from the Ahr - Going Steep

The natural wine-growing boundary runs along the 51st parallel, and the vineyards of the Ahr lie significantly above it. Yet, this wine-growing region is considered one of the warmest in Germany and, with its south-facing slate slopes, is easily capable of producing dense and velvety red wines. The leading variety in the often small parcels is the Spätburgunder, which presents itself in the glass as an elegant and fruity wine.

Characterful Ahr Wine

The Frühburgunder is also very popular in the Ahr, ripening slightly earlier than the Spätburgunder, which is itself a rather early-ripening grape variety. Essentially, all Burgundy varieties have found a hospitable home here. Additionally, there are also individual Blauer Portugieser and Riesling vines, which, however, make up a minimal share of the already small wine-growing area.

Just before the Ahr flows into the Rhine, gentle and refined wines can be discovered in the wineries. At the other end of the growing area, however, juicier and more mineral wines are produced. Wherever one is in the Ahr - the wine is mostly red. About 87% of the vineyard area is cultivated with red grape varieties. This makes the Ahr the largest contiguous wine-growing region in Germany for red wine - and the red wine from the Ahr the ambassador for top-tier winemaking.

The Unique Climate of the Ahr

The unique conditions of the Ahr are due, in addition to the heat-retaining soils of slate, loess, and volcanic rock, to the climatic peculiarities of the region. The protected locations between the Vosges and Eifel experience numerous hours of sunshine but only low rainfall.

The Typical Ahr Wine

Wine from the Ahr - must be a Spätburgunder. This is usually correct, even if all Burgundy varieties, as well as Riesling and Portugieser, thrive on the southern slopes. The Spätburgunder, however, holds a special place in the hearts of the people in the Ahr Valley. It is not uncommon for the early-ripening Spätburgunder grapes to be pressed as rosé. A specialty is also the Ahrbleichert, a white-winemade Spätburgunder wine.

However, the star in the red wine paradise of Ahr remains the red-pressed Spätburgunder, which embodies the terroir of the Ahr. The sun-fed soils provide the vines with pleasant temperatures day and night. The mountain ranges protect against rainfall, and the mild "Mediterranean climate" contributes to the Ahr wines presenting themselves as velvety and well-structured.

Deep loess soils and volcanic rock intermingle beneath the slate soil and provide the vines with lush minerality. Along with the fruity notes, a slight earthy note can be detected in the wines from the Ahr. All these nuances come together in the wine to create a dense symbiosis of the best that this small wine-growing region has to offer.

Wineries in the Ahr Wine Region

Weingut Burggarten

The generational winery, located near the mighty Landskrone, is responsible for about 120,000 bottles of Ahr wine from its 15 hectares. And they are very popular, as only about 20% leave the boundaries of the Ahr wine-growing region. The rest is sold directly from the estate. All the better that VINELLO has managed to acquire the rare wines from Weingut Burggarten. Grown partially on volcanic rock and matured in wooden barrels, the wines present themselves with an unparalleled elegance and freshness in the glass.

Meyer-Näkel

Everything the Ahr has to offer can be found in the assortment of Weingut Meyer-Näkel. Blanc de Noir, rosé, fresh Pinot Gris white wine, and of course a velvety Spätburgunder red wine. And everything is only of the finest quality. The winery, led by "wine educator" Werner Näkel, is known among the most renowned wine critics and receives top scores from Falstaff, Eichelmann, and Gault Millau.

The wines from the Dernau estate often undergo a long maceration period, thus benefiting from the expressive minerality of the soils. Matured in barriques, the Ahr wines gain even more complexity. The result: award-winning wines from the Ahr, described as "German top winery for red wine" by the magazine Feinschmecker.
